I sometimes read cave forums for the horror stories and someone made a good point on there. As ridiculous a hobby as it seems, cavers look for the easiest way to explore, as opposed to mountain climbers who intentionally find the most difficult way. Caving accidents are horrific but they really do try to keep it safe, it's just an inherently dangerous thing to do.
