I actually enjoyed this movie for its honesty.

Instead of just being another "le evil white man" it pointed out many of the glaring flaws in black culture. Many of the black characters were obnoxious, self absorbed, irresponsible, and overtly racist. Surprisingly, the Italian-American business owner, Sal ended up being the one of the wisest and most sympathetic characters in the movie.

While that is unfortunate, it's not the movie fault. The simple-minded will often only see want they want to or what they're afraid of.

Take the movie Scarface for example. It was meant to be an anti-drug cautionary tale, but it was embraced by "rap culture" for all the wrong reasons.

Buggin and Raheem had no justification as well, Sal can put whoever he wants and the wall and literally told Buggin this

That and Sal literally had nothing to do with it. If Sal killed Raheem then that would make sense, but otherwise it doesn't make sense.

It's a great movie and the message should be obvious but it's very misunderstood, unfortunately. The point of the racist tirade compilation is that every single race harbours disgusting hatred towards the other races. Also Mookie is the first to start off, and that should tip people off that the point of the movie is "racism and cultural division is the problem" not "Dey evil whites".

Sal is innocent, they acknowledged this in the scene before shit hit the fan, when he had a tender moment with Mookie. Problem was that Buggin was a horrible person, we treat him as a joke and his bullying against the white property owner is actually horrifying, but we don't take him seriously. Thus when he and Raheem, another guy we don't take seriously, come in, we expect another round of jokes. Instead the racial tension boils over, the story of Buggin is that you shouldn't underestimate how the seemingly innocent racism can spiral out of control.

There's no doubt both Sal and Raheem overreacted, had they both remembered to treat eachother with respect, everything would've been fine.
