I watched a couple episodes of this series. He gets repeated power ups and blessings from the Pokémon God of the Island. It's also the only series he's had a base setting he returns to every episode instead of continuesly traveling through the region and setting up camps along the way. I did like their new angle of "Pokémon trainers now feel the pain of their Pokémon while they battle". Idk.

But even then, Alain was how everyone imagined the silent-game-protagonists. A gameplay CHAD who goes around having high-stakes battles duking it out with the legendaries and the Elite 4.

One of the main reasons I stopped watching it as a kid was because there was never any progression.. He never really collected badges, he never fought tournaments.. It was disappointing to watch him forever going on side missions getting distracted.

Ash gets power reset every time he hits a new region. Unfortunately this completely blows out any substantial character development which I think hurt the anime in the long run. They should have just aged ash up and had him be a mega elite 4 boomer by now.

Digimon might be Value Village Pokémon but at least they age up their characters.
