Ironically, he sort of didn't. There was a mild-sized outrage mob against him at the time, but it was led by a dumb bitch named Suey who's literal only claim to fame was "starting activist hashtags on Twitter", and because Colbert was actually funny and people loved his show, they defended him.
The reason this is ironic, is because in their time, both Jon Stewart and Colbert could get away with tons of shit because they had so much support. But now that they don't have comedy shows anymore, they have become the scolds and the leaders of outrage against the people they used to be.
