Aladdin and Lion King had guaranteed sales for kids. Kid's movies do well, because moms can dump their kids in a theater seat and text for an hour. Star Wars is a completely different demographic.

It doesn't matter how long it did or didn't take, what matters is what happens. He killed his own father after not seeing him since he was a teenager. That's what really kickstarted his change of heart. But Rey is also another reason he questions his path.
