How would you have explained his disfigurement?

Does /tv agree with me that it was bad storytelling by Lucas having Palpatine shoot force lightning into Windus purple (drank) lightsaber to get Anakin to turn and indirectly permanently disfiguring himself? I mean, all he had to do was stop shooting force lightning and he’d be ok. Mace had no chance against him. The whole scen just came off weird. How would you have explained his disfigurement /tv?

Didn’t Palpatine always look like that from being so deep into the dark side and was using some Sith magic to disguise his real identity?

>I can’t hold it any longer

Meaning his disguise and the lightning.

Well, even though Sheev tells the Senate that the attack on him by the Jedi left him scarred and disfigured, I think you could look at that scene as his true face surfacing from beneath a thin veneer of glamour. He was tapping into so much of the Dark Side, the disguise melted away.

It's an added bonus that his fucked up face provides additional sympathy in front of the Senate. We all know Sheev wasn't actually worse for wear. He was the most powerful living creature in the Galaxy for years to come after this.

Good thread anyway, OP.

You bring up a good point but he jumped back and forth between being Palpatine and Sidious throughout the trilogy but was never disfigured until the Mace battle.

I think a better story would have been to have Palpatine use the Darth Plagius with power to bring Anaking back to life, yes implying that Obi Wan killed him, and that process disfigured Palpatine

No he just meant he was dying. This is what the Sith lightning does to you, the victim turns you into a monster with yellow eyes.

I don't remember that happening to Luke.

That's pre eu

why couldn't they not have had this and have the implication be that he got older and more corrupted over time. I assumed in the original movie that the emperor was like 200 years old or something

Have you never accidentally brushed against / touched something like an electric fence? Being shocked forces your muscles to contract, essentially if you were to grab an electric fence wire your hand would spasm and clench it tightly. Same thing happened to poor Sheev, he clenched his anus and force muscles with the initial shock and it took all his willpower to stop after several seconds.

t. rural user who got zapped by several electric horse fences as a kid

he spent too much time near the ring

This. Palp was a shapeshifter. The light side of windu's saber revealed his true identity. Why is this even a question?

I think Lucas had a moment of utter retardation going about this scene. the original thing he kept saying was the force lightning fucked his face up. Only later on like wikis and shit were people like "um maybe it disfigured him, or maybe it merely unmasked him itisamystery.jpg"

Lucas should have had hints and flashes that Sheev was using a force glamour to hide his true face throughout the trilogy, at least starting in episode 2. Brief glimpses of yellow eyes and shit like that.

>had the high ground
>tried spinning
>screamed

I don't understand. How did Sheev lose this fight?

Because what you're saying is fucking retarded. Occam's razor.

Palpatine's face was fucked up by the lightning like we see in the movie. And no , he wouldn't be OK if he stopped shooting lightning, because Windu was set to kill him at that point. Palpatine hoped Anakin would turn and help him, but he wasn't counting on it - he was fearing for his life.

It’s completely fucked. Not on McDermid, who always turned lemons into kino lemonade. It just makes no sense. I enjoyed shiev, qui gon, duku, grevious, and most of obi wan but much of the prequels are a dumpster fire storywise especially the car chase scene in coruscant and the pod race that was 8 minutes too long

I'd have made him ancient in Episode 1, visibly pushing the human lifespan to it's breaking point. By Episode 5 he's just become that much older with the power of the Dark Side

why couldn't he just be really old.
he needs a new apprentice far younger and more powerful because both him and darth are getting old

that's it.

Lightning fries your face, not make it look like an 85 year old slag. Nice try tho.

I would think beyond Yoda Shiev could handle any Jedi the way Snoke handled Rey just rip away saber, suspend in air, and burn alive. No way Windu should have looked so strong, but Lucas had to to keep his sheboom wife happy

This is another option but I’m sure they wanted to sell Shiev as a shyster in the galactic senate as well

This. Star Wars lore has always held that heavy dark side use will fuck you up physically. Sheev just disguised himself until he could drop the act and pin his disfigurement on the Jedi. There's a great comic showing the ritual he does to maintain his appearance.

Wasn’t Windu just reflecting it back at Palpatine, hence the disfigurement? It’s really not hard to deduce if you watch the scene...

There's a lot more to it; the rest is here:

That's what I always thought, that that was his true form and he just told the senate became disfigured to get sympathy

You're wrong. Sith are always fucked up looking by the evil incarnate. Even Anakin's eyes were glowing & changed color once he pledged himself. A full on Sith Lord would need a disguise to blend in, which is what Palatine did. The force lightening only revealed it.

>I can't hold on any longer. Too weak..

He was just hamming up being "killed" by Mace so Anakin would strike him down, fully turning. All planned.

Of course that’s what happened, but you don’t think the backstory of Shievs disfigurement could have been folks any better? Heck even the idea that he was always disfigured and in disguise is better

I can totally buy this under the condition that at some point beforehand we see he was in disguise

maybe the lightning and the lightsaber in close proximity is what caused the deformity which is why Luke didn't look like shit after Palp zapped him

IMO it wasn't the force lightning disfiguring his face, but his true form emerging. Palpatine had to hide his power for decades being amongst the Jedi. So he reduced his power level to near 0 while he used his mind and cunning to fuck the Republic up.
Then when it was time to bring Anakin over to the Dark, he showed his real power level when fighting Mace.

It also meant he could accuse the Jedi of attacking him and would gain a mandate to hunt them down from the senate.
The Dark Side disfigures its users in certain ways. I remember the expanded universe explaining this in detail.

Just show Palpatine once in the other two movies disguising his appearance then I buy it

Why do you need to see it? Its obvious he has reduced his power level for decades while he has been a politician.
He can play Sith behind the scenes without showing his true form.

thanks for sharing this, love the artwork

It explains everything then. With your theory I guess Count Dooku was using the same power to hide his disfigurement?

This. He just spent all his energy which was used to hold up his less menacing facade, which he no longer needed now that the Jedi knew what he really was.

Too bad it's so obscurely handled in the movie that no one can really figure this out.

I always took this stand, sith magic was some dark ancient stuff that takes a toll on you and sidious was using the most powerful one. they are always taking the moral highground of how much purer they are than the jedi and this is a good explanation of them being huge hipocrites.

Another pleb filtered by Lucas. That was the true Sheev being revealed.

Because it isn't explained and the EU contradicts the movie

Not him. Count Dooku was only a Sith for a few years. Sheev's entire political career was spearheaded and cultivated by a Sith.

Dooku wasn't a Sith in the traditional sense & was playing both sides. Hell, he even warns Obi about Palatine.

Pretty sure he just learned to use a little force lightening & that's it.

you tested them by laying your palm on top rather than fingertips from underneath? zaps are pretty funny though

Being able to shoot lightning bolts is a Sith trait. It is a black art, much like Paganism is maligned in Christian society. Christians have the flaming sword (Google it). Flaming swords (lightsabers) have long been a symbol of Christian soldierdom. The Sith use it against the Jedi as a mockery. Kylo unironically created a the most Christian-esque lightsaber ever. That's why I believe Kylo will be turned from the dark side in episode 9.

>Calling Palpatine by his Disney canon name that wasn't created or approved by Lucas

When he told Rey, "You know I can take whatever I want." I honestly got hard.

He was still disguising himself when he was talking to guys like Nute Gunray (however it's spelled) as Sidious.

Dark side degradation is a thing, it made Sidious look that way. It's no more hard to believe that he could disguise himself than it is that he could totally hide his dark side strength as Palpatine when meeting with Jedi and spending all his time presumably blocks away from the Jedi temple.

Fucking retard. The Tarkin novel's writing began before the buyout and Luceno confirmed he asked Lucas himself what Palpatine's name was for it. Sheev is George's last gift to Star Wars.

The prune face was his true form. Siths and Jedis can see into the future and he knew that Anakin was going to betray Windu and that Sheev could use his prune face to gain sympathy from the senate to put him into power.

>Does /tv agree with me that it was bad storytelling by Lucas
in every single Star Wars movie he was involved in? and the ones he wasn't as well? yeah i agree, they are all complete trash on the level of films for children. which isn't surprising since they are films for children

>films aimed for children must always have bad storytelling

>mfw that was palp's cousin

It wasn't like he was zapping mace windu in front of a mirror and saw his face getting fucked up. After all this he probably went to take a shit and caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror and had a fit.

>if you bad and do bad things for da bad reasons and da bad things happen to ya
whoa how deep user you're right, amazing movie

WHHOOOSH
George Lucas only claimed it was for kids as damage control against criticism, kids movies don't have guys melting like pic related.

I watched the shinning a bunch as a kid, not exactly a kids film but i liked it because it looked fucking great. disney shit i couldnt stand. blade runner was the fucking tits when i was 5 so was the og starwars stuff because i liked spaceships. thanks for reading my blog reddit

amazing simply amazing

This.

I always assumed he was just really old, not suffering from 3rd degree force lighting burns.

Yes. The whole idea was that after he became emperor, there was no need to hide his sith appearance since only the jedi would really know about dark side disfigurement and the jedi were all dead.

The Visionaries comic wasn't ever canon, though.

It's got nothing to do with the lightning you plebs.

Dark side alignment makes you "appear darker" with these sorts of characteristics.

This is stolen from a fucking xfiles episode....
