As the internet put literally everyone in direct contact with literally everything that used to be far outside the boundaries of polite society. The show that invented reality television (the real world) even opened with the line “what happens when people stop being polite, and start being real?” It only took a couple decades for the internet to go mainstream and for people to see what unfiltered humanity looks like. The result is jokes about a ton of things are more sane and reasonable sounding than the reality, rather than being outrageous.
