It's a very well acted and visually engaging film that tells a compelling story and avoids being overly generic or predictable. It's also well made. Why would it not be highly rated?

Cut out everything that happened after she entered the hole in the lighthouse, get rid of the vidya tier alligator boss fight, don't let us see the army video in crystal clear hi def, and build up the bear a bit more and this would be a really kino movie.

The way they handled the bear was really really disappointing. They should've had the group hear voices in the night before the encounter, then after thr encounter they never find their friends body and start hearing her too so that when we eventually get to the bear seen it's tense and makes sense instead of being so rushed and random.

This whole movie was one big missed opportunity.

But Jeff Vandermeer and the "New weird" are heavily influenced by Lovecraftian themes and style.
