My two big complaints about this show is that they made the Skeksis living away from the crystal look healthier and younger than the ones getting rejuvenated by the crystal in their daily sun rituals. And the second one is that the movie established that drinking essence makes you look younger, such as when Skekung drinks Podling essence. But none of the Skeksis look rejuvenated when they drink essence, although they are clearly getting stronger and Skekok even says he can see better after he drinks essence.

Am pretty sure there is a point to this. Maybe being close to the crystal in its corrupted state degenerates them at a higher speed, even though they are briefly rejuvenated by consuming essence/staring into the beams. Also implies the tower Skeksis could have kept themselves younger and more fit if they had bothered to fucking exercise.

As for the movie effects of essence being different from the show’s, I can only speculate that maybe they perfected the formula for essence in the 50 or so trine between the movie and show. We see the Scientist make really big strides in altering the process in just a few days in the show, after all.
As for the Hunter being healthier, I think it’s literally pic related. The skeksis in the castle spend all day every day either getting wasted with parties or laying around doing fuck-all. They’re rotting away from living an unhealthy lifestyle at least as much as they are from getting old. That’s why all the mystics also seem just old but comparatively healthy to the skeksis.
I think in the show at least, essence might not be so literally rejuvenating as much as it just feels good to do and then wears off quickly leaving a stronger craving for more, like an addictive drug.

I thought the reason the Mystics were healthy, was because they existed "less". They do less, eat less, and have less of a physical presence in the world, and why they fade when they die. Whereas the Skeksis are a sensual race immersed with existing and "being". Less spiritual and more temporal, which is why they have nasty deaths and crumble.
Only Skekso seems negatively affected by the darkening.

The crystal is 'sick' though, it's corrupted now. And it's mentioned that the guys in the castle have just gotten fat and lazy. Even Aughra notices that. Heretic and Hunter are out living in the rough and they look fitter because they don't have servants stuffing their faces constantly.

The skesis should've played up that card better. They could've said that he and his gf were sneaking around in the catacombs and came into contact with something they were handling.
