There are a lot of bad coping mechanisms in the world, this one is completely different from being trans because he wasn't being trans, he was being Lenore. And I doubt even the outrage police would care since again he is clearly not being anything like trans and that is made abundantly clear in the episode. Nobody gets upset at Psycho (as far as I'm aware) for the same reason.

The premise here is that the episode would be being released/made today. I can assure you that if Psycho was made today and somehow the Norman Bates premise wasn't already well known that it would be interpreted as a mockery of transgenders or portraying them as killers. I think the only movie like this that would avoid that kind of criticism would be Silence of the Lambs because one of the FBI people specifically says like you did that Buffalo Bill isn't a real transgender he's just confused.
