Because they wanted to make it funny how much more woke she is than the teacher for talking about slaves and the Washington Monument when the teacher didn’t have a clue. It was a bit much. I liked her way better in FFH.
No she was way more autismo/vulnerable and likeable in FFH. Homecoming they wanted the audience to think she was hipster cool and above it all. All snark and buzz killing but oh so smart and clever and it's everyone else who doesn't get how cool she is; just like how all the cat ladies they were trying to impress think of themselves. FFH was more authentic and true to the teen experience. Dare I say relatable. Rather than her being on another level it was just her attempt to come off that way.

MJ might have been the MCUs first really likeable female character. The problem with the MCU was always that no one there could write women for shit. Gamora, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Nebula, they all have more or less the same generic "tough girl" personality. MJ being a prickly tomboyish hipster chick was actually a breath of fresh air. It's a shame she probably won't be in any more MCU movies.
