To be a letdown you need to have a form of expectation other than "it's going to suck". If you saw any piece of media advertising this, you knew it was going to suck. Dark Phoenix was not a let down.
I'll give you 2 reasons why:
>Coming off the heels of Apocalypse, which was a terrible film, basically lowered the bar tremendously for the next film.
>The last time they tried to tackle this in X-Men 3 Last Stand, it didn't go down very well.

I saw Dark Phoenix for the first time last week. It was tremendously bad. Even Mcavoy and Fassbender brought their C game to the table and everyone else performed even worse than them. Special mentions go to JLaw for acting even more bored and disinterested than usual and for having really bad makeup because she can't be bothered dealing with it.

This was a rubbish film. But I wasn't expecting it to be good, either. If you liked First Class and Days of Future Past, then you most likely won't like Apocalypse or Dark Phoenix. X-Men 3 Last Stand was actually better than this. The singular scene in that movie of Jean losing control and obliterating Xavier was far better than anything in this movie had to offer.

I will definitely agree in terms of Nightcrawler. The moment when he realised that going non-lethal just wasn't going to do the job was done quite well. He seems to struggle to cross that bridge but once he does, he almost seems to maniacally fall into a bloodlust state.
I don't recall powers being used very well otherwise. Cyclops bouncing a blast off a car window was especially funny. Storm vs Dreadlocks... well we've all talked about that before.

It's honestly pretty funny how much shit people give Lawrence for hating the makeup and making it so she's in human form as much as possible to avoid it, but in this one Fassbender does the whole movie in probably his own casual clothes and puts on the helmet for like two scenes

And somehow he's still effortlessly good.

Logan was better than every other X-Men movie, and Fassbender was not in it.

The biggest issue with this film is that as a conclusion, it falls flat on its face. They only just introduced both Jean and Cyclops in the shit Apocalypse film and no one has any interesting relationship with them.

At least in Last Stand, Logan/Cyclops/Jean were a major thing from the first film. Far more character development.

Dark Phoenix for me would struggle to rate higher than 5/10. I should give it less because it is truly a below average film.

Weren't expectations extremely low? Especially after Apocalypse and months of reports of Dark Phoenix being so bad that Fox almost didn't want to release it at all.

If anything, expectations were very low. Especially as everyone knew it was gonna be a repeat of Last Stand in terms of plot.

If you actually enjoyed Apocalypse, I see no way in which you will not have a chance at enjoying Dark Phoenix. It's just as bad if not worse so it probably won't bother you too much.

Better than 1 and 3? I don't hold those films in especially high regard at all, but dialogue alone is far better in those old films.

I think the bigger sin of Logan is arguably the forced exposition scene where he's watching the camera footage.

Oh god no. I'm not saying that it's bad enough to take it down. As I said earlier, I think Logan is the best of the bunch. Followed by X2, First Class and Days of Future Past in no particular order. Days of Future Past had its issues, but was still well written and directed. It's got some great scenes.

I'll agree that 1 aged badly. Hair and costuming alone look really bad. But dialogue and writing is still fine in comparison to some of the cheese in DP.

3 had HUGE issues. It's been a while since I've seen it. But Magneto's band of C-grade mutants, Juggernaut, etc were really bad, I'll agree.

The general plot also had issues. But the idea of the cure and what it means to mutants was a fine idea. Rogue in particular being the most motivated to be cured for obvious reasons. A lot of things were mishandled, I'll give you.

I'm not saying X3 was MUCH better than DP. If I was giving DP a 5/10, then I'd only be giving X3 a 5.5 or 6/10.
