They where able to survive without an atmosphere in -300 degree environments while still having the energy to move at decent speed and puncture a space suit. I would have to assume they lived purely off of radiation or somehow fed off of the moons deposits of ore. Though we do know there is water on the moon, so maybe imagine some kind of underground system of caverns that has large deposits of water or ice.
Could come up with almost anything to rationalize it really. We have similar creatures living on the bottom of our ocean floors.

no we don't. there are autotrophic extremophile bacteria that use chemosynthesis to generate energy from inorganic compounds at hydrothermic vents, methane seeps, etc. then there are various hetertrophic multicellular organisms that live on the peripheries of these environments, and subsist off said bacteria
