dare I say based

Yeah. 1B loss.

For God's sake don't let this movie fucking flop. I know it's going to be good, but BR2049 was good too.

killed billions...

it's going to end up like BR2049 and get a cult following with lackluster box office return. For-Profit film making and capeshit really ruined the industry. Hope it's kino

to save 1 million

this

how do dunefags defend swimming in the sand? Its literally impossible

>
Not that hard, just do it

Dune is just a glib facsimile of Warhammer 40k. I mean, 'God Emperor of Mankind'? What the fuck? GW should sue Frank HACKbert.

While the director, Villeneue, is good, and I generally like what he does... the cast he picked (or was picked for him) is bad. Just... no good.

So I think it'll flop.

dude spice lmao

why do people act like this needs to be a thing?

the 84 version is absolute kino, it's unique, there is nothing like it.

Someone give me a short summary of Dune without spoilers, never read.
All I know is spice merchant wars in the desert and there are also big worms for some reason.
And is it worth reading?

It takes several extreme creative liberties from the Frank Herbert book and is generally not a faithful adaptation. I want Vlleneue to do better, because Dune really is a weird, beautiful story.

nice bait mate

>the 84 version is absolute kino

>faggy babyface Paul
>retarded voice weapons instead of gotta go fast
>m-my name is a killing word so is probably muh dik
>gay-ass forcefields
>garbage baron

The TV version is literally better in every regard.

will this just BR 2049 vegas but for 2 hours?

It's kind of dated and gay desu.

it does take many, but it's like the first LOTR movie omitting like nearly the first 20% of the book because it just simply isn't that important. like tom bombadil, and stopping to eat four or five times doesn't exactly make a great movie.

the psychic sound guns over the weirding way really doesn't bug me that much because they ultimately service the story in the same way, it's an advantage the fremen have by virtue of paul and his mother. they would have been far more remiss to have not included riding the worms, but they delivered and it looked cool. still though the movie is not really an action movie.

though it is true there is extensive lore in the book explaining shields and lasguns and how it all served to reshape how these people waged war - ultimately that's not what the story is about.

I feel like lynch understood all this and chose to focus on the more cerebral evocative elements of Dune, less the literal.

No chance
I suspect maybe 30 mins in desert total, since they split it in two movies

like most scifi/fantasy stuff the first 80ish pages of dune are just boring worldbuilding but it gets decently entertaining the rest of the way. the story is basically lawrence of arabia in a eugenics-fueled future but the desert muslims (who are also zen buddhists) have a spice drug that higher technology runs on instead of oil.

>calling Kyle "The Chin" MacLachlan a faggy babyface

Fuck you.

I hope it will be good. I like Denis Villeneuve's work and Dune.

Attached: btd.jpg (474x295, 32K)

Lady Jessica and Irulan were hot as fuck

imagine spending all that money on a weird movie only a few old timers will know about.
this will suffer massive losses.

the story is a yawner without Lynch's quirky take on it

space worm magic you dumb nigger.

It will as hard if not worse than BR

It's so cooked that a porn game is the most faithful adaptation of the book in another medium so far

>And is it worth reading?
It is.

gonna be the last time he gets a big budget for a while, hope you enjoy it

Some pop-science faggot on YT actually explained that it would be scientifically possible for sandworms to move like they do:
>they move more like snakes than earthworms (so wavy movement to propel themselves instead of compressing and streching rings)
>they move close to the surface creating a "moving mountain" so the pressure is the lowest and sand is easiest to move forward
>their ratio of width to length is within a special requirement made by some biologist for animals to move through sand
>they have a very very smooth scales and surface to reduce friction

First book written in 1969 is pretty much about the oil situation in the middle east mixed with feudal politics and intrigue. Except instead of oil it's "spice" which is a drug that expands your consciousness and is needed for space travel since computers a banned and all calculations are done by humans that are the result of a eugenics program that has been run by over a millennium by some shady group of space nuns/whores. Our main character, Paul, is the end of result of this eugenics program although he's come 1 a generation sooner than planned. His house (the Atreides) have been just been granted the fiefdom of Arrakis (Dune) the one planet that spice grows on. However this is a trap set in motion by other houses (Harkonnen & Corrino) to take out their house and destroy a large cache of spice, thus raising the price of spice and giving themselves more power. This is where the story starts.

Basically there is a spice called melange that gives anyone who uses it prophetic powers.
It's the most valuable substance in the whole universe as it allows interstellar travel (faster-than-light travel requires navigators of the ship to be able to predict future to avoid any malfunctions and fucking up that).
There is only one planet in universe that has melange - desert wasteland Arrakis.
To ensure neutrality and safety, emperor makes sure planet is exchanged between noble families regularly. Basically it is a fee of one noble family for X years then is exchanged to other for another X years. Whole process is very strictly followed so that nobody can exploit the planet's resources for themselves.
The action of the book starts as Paul Atreides (MC) and his family are about to get the planet from another family Harkonnens (the bad guys) as their new fee, but at the beginning it turns out it's all a ruse and a trap to get rid of Atreides and gain monopoly over Arrakis.

how the flying fuck can you measure a loss for a film that hasn't even been fucking FILMED yet, you gaslighting cunt-sore?

*shoves a weirding module so far up your ass that the sound shatters your spine*

>flop incoming
Absolutely less than 30% chance Dune crosses $1 billion, or even $800 million. Typically who cares about box office but the studio/director cut their own throats here with underwhelming fey and novelty casting, and the director is regurgitating his mystic blockbuster glow aesthetic that has grown monotonous and predictably gloomy, it's not accessible. And when you combine that cast, that aesthetic, with a desert setting and an esoteric plot about drugs/worms, your losing a big chunk of domestic audience. Because your message is exclusive not inclusive, and there's no fun gateway of entry a la Star Wars, Stargate, Joker, Hunger Games, even It.

This will be sorta like Terminator: Dark Fate where you'll have Aquaman as Arnie, but who it's for will be unclear. What the stakes are, what the goal is, why it was made, will be unclear. Chamalet is not likeable or convincing for mass audiences as a hero. He's a huge problem here. Furlong in T2 was relatable for parents/kids/teens/singles, Chamalet is a prep school fag nobody likes except media fags from prep schools or twink hounds.

$137 million domestic
$400 million worldwide
$537 million total

Sequel goes straight to streaming, and the streaming series on HBO becomes miniseries. This is the arthouse version of The Dark Tower fiasco. And it was easy to fix. Get Cary Fukunaga for starters. Maybe cast Arnold. Brad Pitt would be clutch.

that sounds pretty retarded

>Another slow, overly stylised reboot of a sci-fi "classic"

No. Only to Guild Navigators and the Kwisatz Haderach. To the rest of humanity it gives a much longer life.

AMA

How are you, user?

Not doing fine. ;_; I'm so tired.

Take a anti fatigue pill father

I know how you feel user. Things will only get worse, be prepared.

> setting
In the far future (ca. 22000 years into the future), humanity has colonised many worlds. Computers are banned in every culture, and religion is important. Instant FTL travel is provided by spice, an addictive substance that also gives people lifespans of centuries and superpowers. The catch is: there is only one planet where spice is found, Arrakis. The most important cultures are:
1) Bene Gesserit: an order of women who strive to control the universe by creating the Kwisatz Haderach through millennia of eugenics. The Kwisatz Haderach is a man able to view the past lives of all of his ancestors and predict the future.
2) Bene Tleilax: a culture specialised in bio-engineering. Nobody likes them, but their biological products are useful.
3) Ixians: a culture specialised in hi-tech. They sometimes get close to defying the ban against computers, but everyone needs what they sell, so they're allowed to continue doing tech.
4) Spacing Guild: the guys who provide FTL space travel to everyone, courtesy of spice.

> the story
Arrakis is part of the Empire led by the Corrino dynasty. At the beginning, it's controlled by the evil House Harkonnen, and the emperor decides to transfer its control to our heroes House Atreides, who are the eternal enemies of House Harkonnen. Jessica, the concubine of the Atreides leader, is a rebel Bene Gesserit, and her son Paul may be the Kwisatz Haderach - but this is not what the Bene Gesserit planned. The Atreides suspect that this Arrakis affair is a ruse by Houses Corrino and Harkonnen to destroy them to the last man.
They're right. And the Bene Gesserit aren't particularly happy about Jessica's rebellion.
Jessica and Paul make contact with the Fremen, the rugged natives of Arrakis. The story begins here.

>babyface Paul

Paul is literally 15 in the book.

>rich kid and his mother go to dune, get betrayed, get revenge
for such a simple plot it's confusing as fuck to read, but in a cool way
like i'm pretty sure your only supposed to get the gist of some conversations, but i could be retarded

Is Chapterhouse worth reading?
For me it's God Emperor > Dune > Heretics > Messiah > Children

Wrong.
It is confirmed, but i forgot if it was in later part of first book or Dune Messiah but every fremen has very mild prophetic powers.
Mentats don't have it because they are not literally constantly high on spice like Fremens, Navigators and Kwisatz Haderach.

That sounds sick
How many books are there? I want to read it now

Curious how this film goes down what with the MC becoming the villain and the abrupt end of the first movie

It;s world building galore
Plot is about a chosen one accepting his role as savior

Don't read anything that wasn't written by Herbert, it's a travesty made to squeeze shekels by his son.
If you have tolerance for weird political shit and philosophical ramblings, read to God Emperor of Dune (by many considered the best one).
If you really really loved the books finish what Herbert wrote but then stop.
Anything else will make you hate the series.

Attached: 23452626.jpg (1144x2560, 1022K)

6 books
I. Dune -> read until here to know the story
II. Dune Messiah
III. Children of Dune
IV. God Emperor of Dune -> read until here to be able to talk about Dune with Dune fans
V. Heretics of Dune
VI. Chapterhouse Dune -> last book before Herbert's death

His son Brian wrote lots of pulp crap that isn't canon. Ignore that.

Dude production finished last month

based golden path
anyone have that Leto II pepe?

Remember to clarify you mean frank Herbert not his son

So there is Dune porn game, thats intresting.

More like a destructive force
He knows that he will cause a jihad

Sand is not a liquid, worms that size wouldn’t be able to move through it

Herbert said explicitly that the point of his Dune saga was telling people NEVER to follow anyone blindly - be it the Chosen one, the Mahdi, the Great Leader, doesn't matter, you can listen to a charismatic person, but never follow them without question.

His death would, read the fukin book.

>read the fukin book
no. watch the movie.

>straight white male saves the brown people and then becomes their master

I'll watch for Chalamet

>the cast he picked (or was picked for him) is bad. Just... no good
Leto, Jessica and the Baron seem like perfect choices, given the descriptions in the books. I always imagined Duncan Idaho as a black man, but Momoa can be a convincing Duncan too. What's wrong with the cast?

Same

>white
Read the books, the Atreides descend from the Greeks and Leto I Atreides is described as brown. The only specifically white blonde character in the first book is Princess Irulan.

yep

Is there a preferred release? Hardback, paperback, nice looking cover, etc? Would newer copies just have the money go straight to the son?

>straight white male saves the brown people and then becomes their master
>Fremen
>Brown people
Just admit you never watched it.

Fremen are white you absolute retard.

It's easy to shit on old sci-fi for lower budgets, but this is why lower budgets, kids.

Dune was niche even as a nerd novel. Now you're spending like crazy on drug addict worms? So much money. Like it's Michael Bay's 2 Fast 2 Homosexual Transforming Car Show: The Star Nostalgia Explosion Experience: Reborn.

(Now that's a ROI project.)

Fremen descend from the Wandering Zensunni, and their language is derived from "the language of the Islamiyat" i.e. Arabic. As far as we know, anyone could be a wandering Zensunni. Fremen aren't univocally black, white or Asian. In fact, race plays no role in Dune, gender does. There are very few physical descriptions of race and skin colour. They could cast Liet-Kynes as a Japanese actor and it wouldn't make a difference, but if they cast a female Tleilaxu or a male Bene Gesserit, that would shit on the lore.

No, because normies aren’t going to like it

I’m a normie and I like it, your wrong

>hurr durr Fremen were any race
When was the last time you described a Black or Hispanic person as having "tanned skin"?

Attached: Fremen.jpg (1020x432, 49K)

Thanks anons

not him, but if you call yourself a normie, you're not a normie. Normies aren't self aware.

Asking the important questions there user
As a collector of James Bond and James Bigglesworth books the answer for me is always the same
First Editions
Especially for Biggles, once the series got popular W.E Johns went back and edited them to be a lot less graphic and aimed at a younger audience.
Kinda like retroactively going from R16 to PG13

Technically, the likeliest people to be the ancestors of Fremen are the Malaysians and Indonesians. You can describe many of them as tanned, and they are mainly Muslim but in close contact to Buddhism, so they could very well be the torchbearers of Buddislam and the Zensunni school. Arabic is the "language of the Islamiyat" and it's known by Malaysian Muslim scholars. The point is that race is irrelevant in Dune. It's set in the far future when humanity has been mixing and evolving for over 200 centuries. Religion is important, gender too, as well as "good genes" for eugenics (e.g. Lucilla's big boobs) but not a single line in 6 books talks about race tensions.

Attached: Malaysian-Malaysia-2-bernama.jpg (800x500, 399K)

Fremen are described as dark-skinned in the book for the most part.

220 million ww?

>licking corporate boot this hard
Who gives a shit if it loses money? It's not like you invested in it personally. The appeal of high budget sci-fi is that the budget allows for the worlds depicted to come across as convincing. We should be grateful that some retard producer gambled his/her money on a high budget Dune.

nigger no one cares

a man of culture I see

yeah it's kino

Ok, kid. Enjoy having your one loss leader sci-fi epic followed by decades of crying about why they won't make any more movies you want.

Imagine reading that tripe lmao

Dune will make 1 billion on day 1

>tfw Frank never got to finish Dune

At least we had God Emperor as the "finale", as the second trilogy is missing an entry. Though I suppose Heretics could be a pessimistic ending to Dune.

Literally everything your mad about was source material in the book. If you think Captain Picard wasn't amazing in that movie then fuck you.
That line about going into the desert like a horses ass. Absolutely kino.

Attached: Farmer Ernie.jpg (385x379, 46K)

this shits gonna bomb so hard lmao

Every story has a racial content to it you dumbfucks. if the author didn't think it did, then that is precisely his racial bias, thinking he can ignore it, that blindness is the racism. anyway the story is modeled after other stories where a pristine savior comes and rescues the natives, it's a classic imperialist racial supremacist narrative. You cannot deny oppression, get over it.

can't decide if b8 or clinical retard, what is obvious is that you haven't read the books

Production budget + marketing is usually about 300M for big budgets like these, and you need at least 600M to get even, more after that is profit. But the director flopped with his last move and Dune isn't loved like Star Wars. Timothee Chalamet is critically praised but not action hero or messiah material like his role is. It'll flop.

The first book is kino, the second one is a bit boring.

You mean the second part of the first book is kino, the first part is boring and it's the part being adapted.

>arabic speaking sand people
>white
Yeah, sure.

Attached: 1558814614649.png (800x778, 328K)

Dunes story is actually boring and uneventful. MUH FUS RO DAH

>MUH FUS RO DAH

god i hate lynch so much
but at least he casts cute girls

yeah this man is clearly an ally of people of color...

looks more like a kkk wizard.

Attached: white devil.jpg (328x430, 34K)

hahahaha no

I hope its a masterpiece that nobody watches

the problem is that not even his death would not stop it. did you read it?

Imagine talking to people who haven't read Dune

Jfc

>first person narration

Eww.

Dune doesn't start until book 4, God Emperor of Dune. It's the movie Dune fans actually want to see, but Hollywood keeps thinking if they can just get it right there's another Star Wars to be had. No adaptation of the first book will ever be a massive hit especially if done even 50% correct. The Dune series changes massively book to book. It's also why they cast Aquaman as Duncan Idaho, all he does is get shot in the head in the first book during the first battle, but becomes a major character some 90,000 years later.

God Emperor is the least filmable, most of it is Leto lecturing people about history and philosophy. Heretics and Chapterhouse is where it really becomes stupid with space Jews, furries and superthots.

Also where all those fake news mental midget trannies now when it was confirmed that this female nig is not playing Liet Kynes but Shadout Mapes?

Attached: fake news debunked.jpg (619x700, 302K)

That's the whole point of wanting it as a movie, it'd be like some long fucked up weird sci-fi painting. Can't have anything like that, how about some more exploding cities, never seen that before!

Attached: baitlitany.png (600x600, 17K)

Except Paul acknowledges that he is using the fremen for his own selfish goals and the book talks about how the whole prophecy is a farce that has been spread by the bene geseret for imperialist needs. It’s critical of imperialism and a subversion of the saviour chosen one trope

heh I posted here before I went to sleep and thread's still up

Only /pol/tards cared about that, but they haven't read the books anyway. They could cast Sylvester Stallone as the leader of the Bene Gesserit and /pol/tards wouldn't mind.

No one hates his version more than Lynch himself.

Who knows? If episode IX is as bad as many expect and fear it will give chance open to another space opera to fill the gap.

I wonder how Villeneuve is going to communicate that idea to the audience.
