the american movie did the right thing by removing it entirely and changing it so he's a companion "she" (because she's a girl in the american one) picked up and has been using for decades, who she tossed away when he stopped being useful. It implies Owen will befell a similar fate and makes the ending that much more horrific. It was a good change.
