I always thought that scene seemed like studio interference, like they cut out the gore and made the kid ADR that he didn't die. I had my suspicions confirmed many years ago when a prop of the kids head went up on a movie prop auction website I frequented. I can't find it now, and it's driving me crazy. I also heard that Green wanted a horror movie soundtrack, but the studio went for a more Punk sound so they could market it as a Skater picture.

This seems to be everyone's reaction when they watched it as a kid

I watched this last year and I have no idea how critics found it overly violent. It's tame compared to pretty much any action movie from the 80s. I guess they were too used to superhero movies being like Spider-Man at that point.
