For one don't wash it with just any kind of shampoo, if you're cursed with curly hair and you blow dry or straighten it. Go easy with it and use a product that will shield your hair from heat, find shampoo that works for you and for sure use a good conditioner, there's much more in depth stuff and it varies from person to person. Me for example my scalp gets dry fairly easy so to combat that I got a keratin based conditioner.

If ever had that, I'd have to trim it and the rest of it. My dad finally started thinning out in his late 70s and 80s. Though he's never been one for style so he just keeps it simple. Plus it kinda thinned out evenly across the top.
