I think Jason's popularity to an extent is because Jason is deliberately played up as "cool" compared to the others. You're intentionally supposed to root for Jason in the F13 movies because most of the victims in the movies are either annoying idiots or insufferable assholes. Compared that with say, Vicky's death in the new Halloween. She was shown to be a perfectly nice girl who gets brutally slashed and stabbed to death by Michael. And Freddy who in life went after little kids.

III was good, but I don't think its as good as the others. Still watch it over II and I.

I can see what you're saying, but I still think there is a difference. Freddy is the kind of guy who takes such joy in being pure evil you kinda can't help but like him. Jason never really felt characterized as evil, especially in later sequels. Just an angry guy who wants people to leave him peace. Even in Freddy Vs. Jason Jason is considered the lesser of two evils and is intended to be the killer people root for.
