I don't think the cats look bad. They look just like they look in the stage shows. What I don't like is how they make singing like the typical corny pop American Idol, X-Factor TV talent show crap.. especially from that Jennifer Hudson.
People reacting negatively to how things look in CGI movies nowadays seems to be more common. The same happened with Sonic. I think it's because of two main reasons. The first reason because it's a shock to their idiot brains seeing something unusual for the first time so their first instinct is to hate instead of sitting back for a few minutes to actually think about it. In this case. The movie is 'CATS' and the cats were portrayed like this in the stage musicals.
The second reason is just so they can feel all special, edgy and give their life purpose by criticising. "Oh my god. No! They look awful! I demand you change this now!". The cats look fine. Get over it.

There are plenty of cats in the movie that look like the one on the left, and this is what they're hating on. They're just hating on the how weird it looks having humanoid looking cats. I don't understand what you're trying to get at when you show the stage show pictures. At first I thought you were bashing how they look in the movies because some are wearing clothing like in the first picture. But some even wear clothing in the stage show too.

Cats was just a big deal because it was one of the first big production musicals, before it musicals would tend to be smaller casts, I think a typical one would be maybe 15 people at most. Cats had 30 performers.

It is weird. I admit it. But it's the modern day movie version of it. We have to effects so it makes sense to use CGI to make them look real instead of costumes. Just like they created Pikachu in Detective Pikachu and all of the other CGI characters instead of using costumes.
