m8 of course they knew. All the cult shit in S2 were red herrings. The hard drive full of secret material is never found - I think dialogue mentions it was destroyed. The bird mask man who shoots Velcoro is just a 20 something trying to get revenge on the people who fucked over his mother (and actually fucked his mother).
S2 took S1's

to the nth degree. I imagine Pizza was pretty depressed when he wrote season two, because it is far and away bleaker than S1.
