How do I start conversations irl about star trek?

I've had enough of you posting the exact same pic every SINGEL THREAD

At least Riker9guy is generating traffic for the thread. These generals need posters like him to keep going.

Indeed. Clearly, Yea Forums is not as based and uncensored as its reputation implies.

Blue boards have been a thing since 2013.

I just finished Measure of a Man and I'm really curious about how the economy works in TNG. My understanding was that it was a post-scarcity setting meaning everyone has access to everything they need. To the best of my knowledge, money isn't really mentioned in the show. Yet right at the end of the episode Picard suggests he and that judge lady go out for dinner and she says "You're buying?" implying that restaurants and what not still charge you for food. I know that DS9 has currency in the form of latinum and that the Ferengi are all about profit, but I am still unclear about TNG and I guess the Federation specifically.

Attached: Harry Mudd in Breaking Bad.jpg (1327x1000, 142K)

There's money, but it's not 'important', with post-scarcity and replicators.

I cannot wait for UBI.

Does Starfleet pay a salary then?

Pretty likely.

memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Money
memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Federation_credit

A lot of those mentions sound like inconsistencies or writing goofs that were later retconned/justified. It's odd to me that money would have been gone for hundreds of years, to the point where people have forgotten how it worked until they encounter it; yet the concept would still be common in idiomatic expressions.

star trek is fifty years old today

Yeah. Basically Gene was full of shit about money going out of existence. It's much more plausible that currency still exists, but is much less important in a post-scacity galaxy.

And died as I knew it in 2001.

Attached: E-R.jpg (1920x822, 148K)

No it was pretty explicitly stated in Catspaw when Sylvia offers Kirk, Spock, and Bones plates of gems and they refuse that currency has no value in the Star Trek universe.

>(The food vanishes and their plates are now filled with cut gemstones.)
MCCOY: These look real.
KOROB: They are, I assure you. Diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires. All the crystalline forms that you cherish above all things. A fortune of them for each of you if you leave here without further inquiry.
KIRK: We could manufacture a ton of these on our ship. They mean nothing to us.

Kirk also said the Federation has no money in ST4, but clearly the UFP is using currency in the 24th century.

What bugs me about TAS is how stiff the characters are (typical HB), where they just move the head up and down every few seconds while the mouthes move but the eyes and face dont. Compared to the TOS show where everyone is extremely animated and moving

I guess every Federation character in every series and movie was just written to be content with the pay they never mentioned receiving for their labor.

It's over. The tripfags won. People are starting to accept them and I'm not talking about the orbiters and apologists. Genuine posters have given up and now treat tripfags as if they were just another user.

>there are people who lurk /trek/ who remember watching TOS as a kid

The average age in /trek/ is like 30. We took the time to do a survey in a thread that was a little slow.

No. She's a pretty face but lacks the strong qualities a leader needs to command a ship in space. How would she handle a Romulan plot to sabotage her ship? What kind of training and education did Eva receive that would prepare her for interstellar travel? Is she at all qualified to negotiate a peace treaty with aliens? All she has going for her is being smug and sexy.

Precious stones aren't currency though. I mean Kirk even says they can reproduce them with technology so because of that they are worthless.

Sylvia and Korob read Kirk's mind and offered him a form of wealth which they thought would appeal to him. If there was a form of secret Federation money no one ever mentioned then they would have filled their plates with that.
You're missing the point of their exchange.

I would share my replicator credits with her.

Yeah but at the same time it's made clear their mindreading is incredibly sloppy, like when they try to frighten Kirk and Spock with something as cheesy as a dungeon with skeletons in it.

>KIRK: Good. Show them in. I'm James Kirk, captain of the Enterprise. This is my science officer Mister Spock.
>CHILDRESS: Let's get right to business. You want lithium crystals and we've got them.
>KIRK: Fine. I'm authorised to pay an equitable price.
>CHILDRESS: We're not sure they're for sale, Captain. We might prefer a swap.
>KIRK: What did you have in mind?

JJs massive transporter range removes the need for currency.

>What do humans fear? Death.
>What do humans eat? Food.
>What do humans want? Wealth.
They went with the most obvious plays which is how Kirk figured out it was all an illusion, and by that point there was nothing Korob or Sylvia could have offered which would have swayed him. The fact still stands that if Kirk held any sort of concept of material wealth then that's what would have manifested on the plates. Even replicator credits might have appeared, although those only become relevant during an energy crisis.
If there were any sort of price Sylvia could have paid to satisfy Kirk she would have given it to him, but there wasn't which is why she resorts to threatening the Enterprise with sympathetic magick.

Kirk was negotiating on Childress' terms. He never offers a price quote and when Childress offers to barter Kirk is basically saying "Well duh, that's what I meant. What do you want?" Kirk is dealing with an idiot and letting Childress make the first moves.

They state there are certain commodities like dilithium which either can't be replicated or are so difficult and energy intensive that trading becomes necessary. Within the Federation labor still matters as skilled people are needed for anything from holonovels to serving on freighters to transport said commodities when a drone ship isn't enough for the valuable cargo. Compensation internally could be as simple as unlimited access to holodeck technology or getting a freighter in exchange for that labor. And the commodity could be purchased likewise. The idea is nobody has to work but there are rewards for it. Using credits of some type would make the accounting easier. Outside the Federation, some exchange happens. Like a great deal of resources go into making a planetary grade replicator or a tiny amount of biomimetic gel. These things can be used for exchange. Or sold for more accepted currency like latinum (another rare commodity.) In short they use money. They'd have to. It's just not about accumulation of wealth and power for its own sake or practical need of the average citizen.

Great point. That's why we go ahead and pretend that never happened.

>Kirk was negotiating on Childress' terms. He never offers a price quote and when Childress offers to barter Kirk is basically saying "Well duh, that's what I meant.

Nice mental gymnastics, but no. Here are some more example, begin your mental olympics

>When preparing to fight Klingons on Organia in 2267, Kirk said, "Well, the Federation has spent a lot of money on our training."

>On two occasions later that year, Kirk commented to a subordinate, "You just earned your pay for the week!"

>That same year, Cyrano Jones, after giving a free tribble to Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, told her, "A tribble is the only love that money can buy."

>Shortly before he retired in the 2290s, Montgomery Scott stated that he had "just bought a boat."

>Leonard McCoy responded to Chang incessantly declaring quotations of William Shakespeare during the battle of Khitomer by saying, "I'd give real money if he'd shut up."

>In the final draft script of TOS: "The Naked Time", self-appointed "Captain" Kevin Riley, while suffering from polywater intoxication, announced to the crew of the USS Enterprise that all male crewmen who attended an upcoming formal dance would be "raised one pay grade." According to Riley, this was to compensate them for all the female crewmen who attended the event each being provided with a pint of perfume from ship's stores.

>In the final draft script of TOS: "Charlie X", Doctor McCoy jokingly told Captain Kirk that, if McCoy was permitted to "just sit quietly in the background and hear" Kirk give Charles Evans a disciplinary talk, he "would gladly give up a year's pay."

>copy pasting
no, it is a no

>Leonard McCoy responded to Chang incessantly declaring quotations of William Shakespeare during the battle of Khitomer by saying, "I'd give real money if he'd shut up."
apparely there was a deleted line (either in the script only or filmed and cut) where Spock replies that humans/federation don't use money anymore

>Spock replies that humans/federation don't use money anymore
if there are resources, there is no reason not to have money.

>apparely there was a deleted line (either in the script only or filmed and cut) where Spock replies that humans/federation don't use money anymore
Nice source

Money is promissory notation. As long as stable institutions like the Federation exists to provide law and order, money (electronic credit system) wold be the most practical way to exchange resources/services.

im wrong, it was the other joke about bones telling spock he wish he stood in bed, and spock says vulcans sleep laying down. disregard my post

Bones and Spock emerge with a bulky HEAT SENSOR and run
down the shaking corridors...

BONES
Bet you wish you'd stood in bed...

SPOCK
Vulcans sleep lying down...

For a moment Bones buys it - then, on their backs -

BONES
Spock, that was actually funny.

SPOCK
We DO sleep lying down.

Exactly. The Federation cannot operate without promissory notes or replicator ration exchange. However, I would say that the Federation only relies on paying for actual labor, instead of allowing individuals to profit by manipulating the flow of money like what is done in a capitalist society.

Right. Different user here, but agreed. If the Federation had truly unlimited energy and could conjure whatever they wanted they'd be The Q. Kirk just didn't want to pay the nice whale lady for his beer in USD. He's a rascal like that.

Holy fuck why wasn't Star Trek Babies a thing? Just imagine those adorable tots getting into all kinds of hijinks while confounding Nanny.

I want to see what the security cheif does when the Trees start speaking spoonhead.

Okay Data, instead of explaining what jokes and figures of speech are to you I'll remind you Picard explicitly stated in First Contact that there's no money and they don't get paid.

This poster Is correct. On the fringes of space of course barter and trade are common and there's likely a form of accepted currency.

When Ro is infiltrating the Maquis in Preemptive Strike she asks Picard if he brought the money and he slaps a bag of coins on the table. In the context of this story "money" is used to describe how far removed these people are from the Federation.

In Enterprise when T'Pol is held for auction in the Orion slave market and we assume people are using some form of currency to bid on her. This is another example of money being used by people on the fringes of society to contrast the morals and values of our heroes with the seedy underworld they're engaging with.

We only encounter money when characters have to deal with sex traffickers and terrorists, so it obviously isn't something important for the average Federation citizen.

I thought that autism died in 2008

Do you really think someone who does it for free has a tremendous amount of foresight?

Who got banned?

Who in Star Trek owns the means of production? The answer is anyone with a replicator. If the means of production are self owned why then is currency needed when you already have access to what you need?

You can't replicate latinum and limited resources have a different paradigm for calculating worth versus limitless factory commodities.

I'm heckin stoned at work.

No one, as far as I, an independent /trek/poster, am concerned! Heh heh!

With hope, porn will fix her

Replicators still need power to operate so the means of production aren't entirely self owned.

I'm curious as to how they handle things like real estate. What determines who gets to live in a big mansion and a vineyard like the Picard family, and who gets to live in a city flat like Barclay?

What is the best episode of TNG Season 1?

Attached: hmmm.png (470x454, 11K)

Maybe some people don't want a vineyard.

Yeah but who makes the replicators comma dumbass?

At a certain point, some of the finer points of Star Trek's economy have to be explained the way Mike Okuda responded when Time Magazine asked how the Heisenberg Compensators worked: they work just fine, thank you.

Attached: jeanluc.jpg (950x1200, 733K)

Will need some sauce on top right, my man

Thanks. I think. I'll take what positive strokes I can get.

We don't know what replicator access is like for non Starfleet personnel. But the replicator requires energy and at least a few blocks of common elements if I'm not mistaken. And while we've seen Starfleet computers fart out designs on the fly, it's sapient beings who usually do the design work. And maintenance. So the means of production part is an antiquated notion of little concern. There's still money, Jim. But not as we know it.

Grant Morrison oft quoted comment in Rolling Stone:
>Even as Hollywood transforms itself into a superhero-industrial complex, struggling to find “gritty” and “realistic” takes on flying Übermenschen in rubber suits, Morrison revels in the glorious madness of these stories. “People say kids can’t understand the difference between fact and fiction, but that’s bullshit,” he says. “Kids understand that real crabs don’t sing like the ones in The Little Mermaid. But you give an adult fiction, and the adult starts asking really fucking dumb questions like ‘How does Superman fly? How do those eyebeams work? Who pumps the Batmobile’s tires?’ It’s a fucking made-up story, you idiot! Nobody pumps the tires!”

>Okay Data, instead of explaining what jokes and figures of speech are to you I'll remind you Picard explicitly stated in First Contact that there's no money and they don't get paid.
Which has been contradicted before and after TNG. The simple fact is that it's an inconsistent detail. Don't be mad. Get smart.

11001001

Encounter at far point. Season one sucks desu.

B.but stories aren’t good unless you plan out all those details from the beginning!

>The answer is anyone with a replicator.
Wrong. The Federation owns the means of production because they are the ones who can gather the fuel for replicators.

Jimmy (Vee Eff) knows very little about Star Trek

It's almost like a franchise which accepts script submissions has weird inconsistencies because it's fiction. One common philosophy throughout is that wealth isn't important to the characters in Star Trek. Even with a character like Quark his naked avarice is always played for laughs.

If we're just going to quote random episodes at each other then we aren't going to have a productive conversation, we're just going to end up at "but who replicates the replicators?"

>attention whore wants productive conversation

Attached: TheComic.jpg (851x901, 252K)

I would much rather discuss whether Vulcan cuties are too smug or not smug enough.

>It's almost like a franchise which accepts script submissions
Moot point. They have a team of writers and lorekeepers which alter the scripts to fit into Star Trek. The actual fact is that Roddenberry decreed, early in TNG, that money doesn't exist but all of the writers could never figure out how the Federation is supposed to work under that rule (protip: it doesn't) so every now and then they threw in references to currency but most of the time they tip toed around it. Ronald D. Moore talks about this.
>If we're just going to quote random episodes at each other then we aren't going to have a productive conversation,
Headcanon isn't a productive conversation or whatever. The truth has been dished out. Star Trek is inconsistent about whether the Federation uses currency or not. That's a simple fact. There is no room for discussion. Now if you want to brainstorm how the Federation could operate with or without money, then go ahead and maybe you'll generate good discussion. But right now you just seem angry that I contradicted you with lines from the actual franchise.

I responded to your wall of quotes with points of my own which describe the narrative function of money in Star Trek and you didn't reply to it.
We can agree there are inconsistencies because it is a science fiction tv show called Star Trek not Captain Kirk's Tax Policy.

NO OPEN DRINKS NEXT TO THE WARP CORE HOLY SHIT I'LL HAVE YOUR PIP FOR THIS

reminder that women can thot patrol too

Can't it be both? We never firmly established the MSRP of Vulcan Love Slaves.

>have a team of lorekeepers (also called editors irl)
An editor is a different position.
>still can't keep their shit straight
Did you even read my post? That wasn't the issue.
>I responded to your wall of quotes with points of my own
Your posts were mostly full of complaints and other irrelevant utterances. I have only engaged in fact, but you seem more interested in being mad that I used quotes from Star Trek to contradict your claims. I don't think you're interested in the truth, but rather just pushing your narrative.

>I don't think you're interested in the truth, but rather just pushing your narrative.
My narrative of referencing things that happened in the show?
You don't want a discussion you want to argue, and you keep ignoring the point of my posts while you wander off in left field pursuing sources that have nothing to do with our discussion.
Dismissed.

What is the point of your posts?

That you're dismissed.

bussard ramscoops

You're being very emotional and illogical. It seems my prior analysis of your emotional state and its influence on your actions was correct.

Why are Romulan episodes so kino?

Attached: D'deridex_class.jpg (1400x767, 244K)

Because questionable fashion choices aside, Romulans are pretty much the alpha quadrant master race.

I enjoyed the first 2 seasons of tng

people only hate it because its a meme to hate it, sucks they dropped that plot and didn't resolve it

Can't bussard scoop dilithium, bro. We've all tried. (Just like we've all tried to figure out why the fuck they need dilithium.) Just isn't logical.

Because deviousness (Romulan) is a more compelling trait than aggression (Klingon).

Attached: vree.gif (264x200, 26K)

Ya gotta think Scotty was buzzed on duty most of the time. It explains why he told the captain resetting the WiFi router would take 3 days, and then Kirk would be all like, "you have one hour, Mr Scott!" and feel erect to the tip in his leadership skills. Then drunk Scotty chuckled and got a power nap.

aren't romulans beta quadrant though?

True, but even the elderly Jake in The Visitor had a nice big house.

season 2 is good. in fact it might actually be better than season 3.
crusher's return sucked all the fun out of the crew banter

Listen, I just want to have a productive conversation that validates my world view. Dismissed, piss and shit, etc.

Has tranny posting been replaced with furposting now?

I fucking hope so

This scene was disgusting and had no place in a Star Trek production. You filthy degenerates can all go to Hell.

Can you imagine if they actually looked like Caitians?
Kirk getting so much pussy pussy in one sitting, it'd but any man's dick in a wheelchair

What did Gene mean by this?

M-More

They didn't give a fuck about continuity in the 80s and it is impossible to reconcile all references to money/lack thereof

Replicator replicators comma fren.

What you smokin'?
Kirk gets women all the time and he needed some quality pussy as a youngin' with a lot of load to give

Yes. But that's just how long their (uncut?) dick's are, user.

Not great, not terrible.

Attached: hoshislut.jpg (340x344, 12K)

100% uncut

Romulans are uncut because they're not Semites.

>Write so Kirk bangs Caitain twins
>Take away almost all the Caitain features
Fuck JJ

Padded bra. According to Gene's vision. But I totally would regardless.

So which race is cut? Ferengi or Bajorans? Both? They both seem way more obsessed about ears.

AND I WILL RETCON THE EVENTS OF DS9
BASHIR WAS REALLY GAAaAaAAY

Kirk never engaged in romance-less hookups, despite your surface level knowledge of Star Trek

>still talking to yourself

Didn't he even impregnate a native gal?

Yes, that he was married to

And he got married when on a scouting mission?

This dude gets AROUND

Attached: samefag.jpg (636x480, 166K)

Bajorans are definitely cutfags, maybe the Vulcans too because they need to limit their sexual pleasure.

I am, just finished sesson 3
I just want to get to TNG already, jesus

>watching tv is a chore I have to get though
maybe do something else, user?

oh no! redmarks next to my dear sweet space cat!

The actress who played the qt Trill at Ops in that movie died in June.

tfw you're only now watching voyager because there's nothing else left to watch again
which episodes are kino?

Well, the original series seems like the only chore

Another Trek show with a black woman in command. What a shock.

uh okay

sorry, guy
incel mod hates space cats and nonhumans I guess
Not even sure how this is "porn"

Absolutely retarded. Why not just hit them each with a torpedo?

They’re all good except Fair Trade because they go to a spacemall with a fascist security chief and that concept just bores me

Let's keep this an upbeat thread. 2000 people have starred on trek. We don't need an update every time one of them passes. Please be respectful.

Don't get hung up on gender/race. It won't help you enjoy the show.

Just let it go, buddy.

>they go to a spacemall
sounds familiar

I don't watch CBS's "Trek" abortions.

weird response
you should let whatever it is that is burning your neurons go

But they were all filmed on the CBS lot

>*humming Enterprise engine noise*

>franchise caretakers debate

Attached: no.jpg (480x480, 22K)

I enjoy having the physical media.

>Upbeat
You say that, but suppressing your tears can lead to dangerously high salt levels.

>lol u mad? u so mad

I just get drunk. When I'm hung over I cry at anything. To keep it on topic: Which iteration has the smartest uniforms? For me it's TNG.

I wasn't. Maybe nobody is. I'm all for upbeat. It just like sodium levels spiked here. Maybe it's partially my fault for contributing to replicator macro economics fapping. IDK. I'll take what I can get.

Why does that antiAmerican retard Robert Picardo hate Trump so much? Why does he want to turn America into South America? Why doesn't he just move to South America if he likes it so much?

Attached: antiamericantard.jpg (524x635, 76K)

This has already been discussed.

>This has already been discussed.
Something quite rare in a trek thread, huh?

How do I give myself a (You)?

A lot of the anons who shelter here communicate though sarcasm and vitriol. Just nod and smile.

>This has already been discussed.
>NO WAAAAAAY???!!! HERE, ON /TREK/??!! YOU MUST BE OUT YO DAM MIND, SON!

just finished tng after finishing tos a few months ago
should I watch ds9 or voyager next?

Don't confuse loony lefties with common sense. It's like throwing holy water on demons.

Maybe it won't turn into 200 posts about whether or not the billionaire savior of humanity knows where Alabama is

You shouldn't, people will know. I've been caught doing it and it's not a good feeling.

start new chain

I thought it was all about Russian collusion!
No wait...
That was Hillary.
MUELLER WILL SAVE US FROM BAD ORANGE MAN!!

I just want to know how to make it not seem obvious. I figure if I keep the thread bumped with schizo posts maybe someone else will eventually reply.

Maybe Mueller knows where Alabama is

You don't just jump into samefagging. It's a craft that takes time. Study BF's posts carefully, then when you're ready, make a move.

Have a Romulan ale. Great question on the uniforms. I've been mulling it over since a previous thread. Even though it isn't exactly my generation and I think First Contact/DS9 uniforms would be more comfy and logical, I'm probably gonna have say Wrath+ wardrobe was peak fashion. Plus they kept the skirt option.

Attached: 46378-0d65b3234f9368dafaaa6562c15c1c6e.jpg (300x300, 22K)

Those people are not well.

>turtlenecks on military unis.
'tis a no

Why would I make a move on a tripfag? I want to know how to reply to myself. Discretely.

ds9

Funny... I thought it was supposed to hit Florida real bad.
You idiots and your idiotic arguments. You'll never stop grasping at straws. Why don't you go burn a few more trash cans or commit another fake hate crime/false flag?

Maybe I'll shove my fist up your ass instead

I doubt Muller even knows where his own country is. If you gave him a globe, he'd probably try to fuck it.

new thread?

Naa I think we’re good

I'd like to see you try it, pussy.

be frens

Attached: 1469064325608.jpg (1387x702, 148K)

But they aren't *technically* military. And space is cold, user. What's so bad about turtle necks anyway?

>What's so bad about turtle necks anyway?
I'd allow it if they were fishermen. It looks civilian

kys faggot

They look like Nazi uniforms. What are they, Hugo Boss knock-offs?

how do you get "nazi" from that look?

Because they look like Nazi uniforms. DUH.

Attached: Untitled.png (774x668, 571K)

Did you paint this?

...

If i had painted it she wouldn't be wearing panties

Pedro?

Obviously Alfred pumps the Batmobile's tires. Morrison couldn't have picked a more moronic example

I don't really see the Nazi connection. But that and the evil aside, those unforms were also really nice. And the question was which uniform was best. Not which was least antisemite fisherman.
