I watch a ton of movies, nothing here is """popular""" anymore, unless you mean that they've been praised critically for generations, which is just indicative of them being good. That's why I hate these threads, no one ever has an interesting discussion about the movies, or what makes people like them so much, it's just so people can make the most obscure and "patrician" top 3 lists possible so they can impress eachother.

Sounds like u and I have the same taste. Would it be fair to say that you're perhaps some what of a perfectionist, that values quality and the sum of the total package a lot in film?
I don't know. I can watch a lot of different movies and get entertainment out of different aspects of them. However there are certain movies that are so good I can watch endlessly. Your list are the ones I've seen probably more than ten times.
Ed Wood
Dr Strangelove
House (1977)
I saw the shining for the second time in 2013-14. It had gone ten+ years since I last saw it and it was around the time of the Room 237 hype on Yea Forums so I thought I'd give it a rewatch. It was a late november night, saw it on my laptop with headphones on. And I found myself screaming a few times. Can't believe I did that but there's a few scenes in it thta are archetypical, universal horror scenes that chills your bone.
I found the redrum-scene the most frightening. Watching your kid walk in on your, in a psycho state, wielding a big kitchen knife, saying a nonsensical "redrum". In dysfunctional families those things can happen, and it's the warped reality in the shining that truly makes it scary to me. The abuse, the individual having cabin fever, the massacre, the isolation. Kubrick manages to make those things real in a way no other one has done. The soundtrack, the cinematography, editing, scenery it's just too well made.
I hate these threads cause theres always that one miserable, boring fuck who says everyone that has good picks has bad taste and everyone with dumb or obscure picks is based

Dead Man Walking

that is true, Ive seen Die Hard at least 12-14 times by now, and It's A Wonderful Life is a yearly tradition the last 13-14 years since it always on the telly at christmas time
In case your interested, here's the rest of my list. It gets less solid after the top 3 that is pretty much cemented in stone (or I change out the shining for another Kubrick depending on my mood)

I heavily disagree with him but even so, how is that a dishonest statement if he really feels that way? No person can make a legitimate and correct judgement on what the "best" anything is. It's fine for him to feel that way.

Its a what japanese I think horror movie. I dont want to give anything away but its like The Mask with Jim Carey except its not a comedy and it does not have Jim Carey or Cameron Diaz in it.
But he isnt just saying that it's his favorite, hes saying it's the best, which is a completely different statement that can be tested/debated. Otherwise anyone can say dumb shit like "toy story 2 is the greatest horror movie". There are some opinions more educated and more backed by facts than others. The shining, while a good, thrilling movie, is pretty weak with regards to the horror genre
I watched it a couple of weeks ago, good quality with subs. As for the film itself to be fair I wasn't sure what to expect of it, not as scary as the images on google make it out to be, but still quite unnerving and great cinematography

No. There can definitely be opinions more informed than others but they never go above opinion when it comes to discussing the quality of a piece of media or how well it fits into a genre, which are already nebulous in definition. People can argue over all this until they're blue in the face but there will never be someone who is "correct".

You are wrong. Any one who jerks themselves off to the "oh well it's all subjective so it doesnt matter" idea is wrong. Some horror movies are objectively better horror movies than others on several bases and some horror movies are better movies in general than other horror movies. You can continue to argue this while you sniff your own farts and rub your nipples at how "accepting" you are of other peoples opinions or you can face reality and admit these two facts.

Very nice!
NOT!!!
Back up that there are objectively better horror films and objectively better films in general with facts. You should be able to, right? Make sure to do so while citing actual evidence while not letting your personal experience or bias get in the way at all. If your own interpretation factors into applying said evidence, don't try. Use only inarguable fact.

City of the Lost Children
1. The Shining
2. Alien
3. Apocalypse Now
like said
It's a somewhat "artsy" movie (in a good way), that is to say, small cast, few sceneries, focus on character interactions and story. A tale of two females, which is a kind of different approach, but here it works really well.
It has a very japanese setting, but the basic story is fully understandable for westernes also. As long as you understand basic concepts like spirit, ghosts, masks, decievers, and such i Like most japaneses postwar films it deals with the loss at ww2 in an abstract way, the destruction and effort to rebuild. Aceepting your fate and such. Looking onwards.
It's solid from a technical stanpoint, really well lit, the black/white photo has great contrast. the focus/depth is adequate, the movemeent, flow and perspective are really well made. Same with the sound. Really good acted also, the females perform.
Nobody will reply to me, so why bother?
> Spirited Away
> Mulholland Drive
> Pan’s Labyrinth
Predator (1987)
Robocop (1987)
The Thing (1982)
Sure. Compare Alien to Jason takes Manhattan. Both slasher films, both horror movies, however the quality difference and the utilization of horror are night and day. As horror movies, Alien actually puts effort into its horror aspects. It sets up its world and characters rather than try to give off a monster truck rally "FUCK YEAH! JASON IS TOTALLY GONNA KILL THESE TWO PEOPLE LOLZ" vibe right off the bat like in Jason takes Manhattan , it's a slow, eerie build up to the actual violence and doesnt try to blow its whole load with over the top, often times hilarious deaths that the series depended on during its later installments. Alien makes more of an effort to create an atmosphere that reflects the horror genre; it creates high stakes, it uses poor lighting and claustrophobia to its advantage, it tries to develop a sense of helplessness with the setting and situation. JTM has a similar scenario for the first half of the movie on the yacht, however it fumbled it entirely with more cheesy gags, lack of suspense and general silliness.
As for just being a better movie in general, the special effects, editing, writing and sound design are objectively better in alien and these are hardly up for debate. JTM had a much lower budget and less veteran talent, and a lot of the editing and scenes were jumbled, confusing messes. Like at the end where Jason turns into a little kid during the toxic waste flow under manhattan? Or the attempt at character development where the girl suddenly remembers she was abused when she looked into the puddle?
10/10 choices. fuck me. this is good. this is too good.

fun fact: when darth vader slaps jack donaghy on the shoulder before the white house briefing, the editor loops the video for a couple seconds to draw out the pause to make it funnier. If you watch Alec Baldwin's eyes they move back and forth.
What you're describing is a reasonable take to have based on your perspective on both horror as a genre as well as what genres those films fall into but the problem is that you're approaching with a limited scope and not addressing the more particular tonal goals of each film. Your definition takes horror as an idealistic description of what a horror film should be as opposed to what historically fell into horror. It also doesn't address that Alien is a horror film with a hard-scifi angle, trying to have a serious tone maintained by a strong sense of place, attention to detail, and cast whereas JTM is trying to be a contemporary slasher. It is not after being scary, it is after being a thrill ride. It aims to fit into horror aesthetically and fits thematically as horror, being a slasher but isn't trying for "scary". Just as Alien aims for a strong setting and tone, JTM aims to exploit its settings to give flavor to its kills. Another element to take in mind is when they came out and how said cultural landscape would shape how they're made. Alien is a slasher but was made right around when they exploded and thus wasn't after chasing that wave. It merely had said elements in a way that worked for it naturally. JTM came late into the 80s while slashers were dying down. It aims for a laidback and occasionally comedic approach to its "horror". It was also held back by budget so it wasn't able to have more variety in locations and resorted to silly fantastical elements that wouldn't tonally clash too much with the other less serious elements. My points on both are simplified but I hope you get what I'm getting at. There is no set standard for what is horror and being scary certainly isn't one. There's a lot of differences in people's perspectives on this and there are so many facets that could be taken into account that Alien could just as easily be argued at being a better horror as JTM as it is to argue they aren't comparable.
