Legitimately one of the best TV series ever. It's a true Western. It has great gunfights, and the relationship between Raylan and Boyd is complex and meaningful. I envy you. I wish I could turn back time and watch this series again for the first time.

I don't know why I'm bothering to answer someone who just proved themselves a liar but whatever: they originally planned to kill his character off, but then decided they had to keep him around. So the show is very light on him initially, he becomes more important towards the ends of the first season and afterwards is a big character.

Haven't but I would suspect they're fairly different from the show because Raylan, iirc, was a fairly minor character in the couple of books he appeared in, and he's still working in Miami or some shit instead of Harlan country. The only exception to this is the book Elmore wrote after the success of the show, Raylab, as that's more aligned with the show itself, and the show later adapted some aspects of the novel into one or two episodes.

I tried watching it and it seemed okay, but it was episodic. Each episode was pretty independent from the next.

And I hate that shit. It's boring. Nothing matters. The characters don't care what happened last episode, so I don't either.

Keep watching, from the end of season 1 onward it's pretty much entirely serialized.
