You had slo and cro want independence (due to foreign influence), then you had serb minorities within croatia separate themselves in an enclave, serbia devaluing the dinar making croatia unable to buy anything, Tuđman and Milošević made a deal to divide Bosnia among themselves and rebel groups within BiH started their shit. Once the hostilities started, US blockaded Croatia from buying weapons. Once the Serbs made some headway with the war and many died, the foreign powers allowed Croatia to buy weapons and US helped them organise Storm and Flash. Then also foreign powers started characterising it as a genocidal war, despite the aim was removal of communities (by force if necessary, but not extermination). Of course, you had those within the ranks and in leadership who did commit war crimes out of hate, but it wasn't a concerted effort.

I think that's because you really have to be a local to get the sentiments and then you're inevitably biased towards the side you're from. Westerners always look for some simple reason why Yugoslavia fell apart as if such a thing exists. You could say it all went to shit after Tito's death and that decade of 1980s, despite being seen as great by nostalgic old people, was really the period when degeneration accelerated and country fractured. Basically, no one really held the reins and Serb answer was to centralize.

the early communist resistance movement in croatia was serb dominated even though they were the minority in croatia. communist resistance was the only way serbs could fight against state sanctioned genocide being carried out against them by the independent state of croatia (this is not some conspiracy, it was openly proclaimed as the government policy). croats only started swelling the ranks of the croatian resistance movement later in the war. this is why, when the modern croatian borders were being drawn in 1943, they were being created under the assumption that serbs and croats would be "constituent" peoples (a yugoslav specific term denoting that, regardless of who has the demographic majority, they share power equally). come 1990. the nationalist croat parties come into power in the first multiparty elections and forcibly change the constitution erasing this concept completely. this was followed by adopting ww2 era ustashi imagery in state symbols and illegally importing weapons from hungary. also, sackings of serbs from their jobs and influential positions was not uncommon. now you tell me whether the serbs were in the wrong when they opposed the newly created croatian police force from entering their communities and enforcing the rule of the government which has just disenfranchised them. of course, things took a turn for the worse when croats unilaterally declared independence from yugoslavia which was opening an even bigger can of worms.
