In 1998, John Connor is murdered by a T-800 sent back in time by Skynet alongside the T-1000. However, John, his mother Sarah Connor and the reprogrammed T-800 nicknamed "Uncle Bob" have already prevented Judgment Day and changed the future.
In 2019, cyber-enhanced warrior Grace arrives from 2042 to protect the future leader of the Resistance, Dani Ramos, from Rev-9, a Terminator sent back to assassinate her. Rev-9 kills Dani’s brother and father, while Sarah rescues Dani and Grace, who doesn’t know who she is. Sarah explains that since John’s death, she has been hunting down Terminators with the help of an anonymous source that texts her the Terminators’ coordinates. Grace traces Sarah’s source to the United States, and his location matches coordinates that were tattooed on Grace’s body.

Based on the endless character swaps(and each directors add their own shit lore), some speculated that the future can never be changed; each time jump just creates an entirely new timeloop so there's no possible way to go back to a traveller original timeline.
It's pretty sad because a prequel movie about Kyle Reece fighting in the future war could have been pretty interesting. It wouldn't have been as good as T1 or T2 because with prequels you always know the outcome, which removes a lot of tension, but it still could have been cool. Salvation actually did 370 worldwide off of a 200mil budget, losing roughly 80 - 100 million in the process. Terminator genisys did 440 off of an 120 million budget, losing between 20 - 50 million depending on the source. Terminator 3 possibly broke even after hollywood accounting with 433 off of 200 invested.
These films haven't been significantly profitable since T2 and the vital US audience hasn't had any interest in the franchise since salvation onwards, with only 20% of ticket sales for genisys coming from America. So while the revenue for the last couple of films might appear to be going up, it's actually rapidly dropping.
The only reason Dark Fate is being made at all is because Paramount is on the verge of bankruptcy and are throwing everything they can at the wall in a last ditch effort to pull a hit from somewhere and terminator is one of the only significant franchises they own at the moment.

Whereas she was an improved T-800 packed to the gills with weaponry and a nano machine outter layer to hid said weaponry and to shapeshift and blend in the new one is a faster endoskelton but lacks the outright toughness of the classic T-800s and the nano machine skin can separate and operate as it's own machine but is apparently a much weaker T-1000.
Basiaclly the more badass machines like the T-1000, T-X, etc. were created though multiple time loops where Skynet improved itself bit by bit with each new loop and Legion is only on its first time loop

Genisys was a soft reboot that completely erases the timelines of 1-4 in favor of a story where cyberdyne a.k.a. not-apple makes some internet-of-thing ai that goes rogue and nanomachines and stuff and somehow, but the storyline doesn't really make sense, because the kick off point for the plot happens when skynet has nanomachines in the original T1 plot line. It's shit basically.
For dark fate, they seem to be throwing everything out and just having a new bad AI that is skynet and genisys mixed together, with john not even in the film and the AI being able to send back infinity terminators. It's even more shit.
