Because deportations, unfortunately, aren't carried out as punishment nearly as often as they ought to be. Deportations also come with jail time. You typically need to be arrested before you're deported. Bigger issue though is, instead of fortifying the border and tightening the laws, people would prefer to decriminalize the crossing or lessen the penalty for it. Thus far most people deported wind up sneaking BACK into the country. Why would making it easier to cross in here change that in any way?
