What are the comedies you're "expected" to have seen? Either ones that are referenced a lot, made a big impact at the time or are generally considered good. I've seen very few comedies so I'm trying to just power through even the ones I don't like to understand references and find some I like. If you know of any criminally underrated ones I'll give those a go too.
What are the comedies you're "expected" to have seen? Either ones that are referenced a lot...
Bump because I'm also curious what people say. I think most will be like late 80s or 90s movies.
For what it's worth, the ones I think I've seen referenced the most have been
>Airplane!
>The Anchorman
>Austin Powers
>Naked Gun
>Zoolander
>Police Academy
>Planes, trains and automobiles
>Evil Dead 2
>American Pie
>Ghostbusters
I also figure the ____ movie franchise has to have made some sort of impact since there's a ton of them, but they seem to be shit. Then there's a lot of Bill Murray stuff I don't know what to classify as.
scary movie 1-2
half baked
airheads
encino man
/thread
Dr Strangelove
Some like it hot
Early woody allen , eg. banannas , take the money and run.
>scary movie
Do these still get talked about? I'm happy you said 2 as well though, I saw the first one and Anna Faris is now my waifi
Bill and Ted (1 especially, but 2 is worth it too)
some what the wayans bros are ingrained in the culture
Scary Movie 3 makes it for me just for that one shot of Anthony Anderson racking his shovel like a shotgun.
borat
lebowski
office space
blues brothers
ferris buellers
ace ventura
40 year old virgin
ghostbusters
>40 year old virgin
You serious?
This isn't about good comedies, it's about which ones people assume everyone has seen.
I just watched National Lampoon's Vacation for the first time last night and thought it was only OK. Some laughs, but too much reliance on simple "A says one thing, B disagrees, B then says that same thing" jokes.
Christmas Vacation is GOAT
Is that one expected though? I thought it was just a meme here. This opens up for the disturbing thought that Paul Blart: Mall Cop might be on the list.
not really. haven't seen it but i doubt that many others have either. they just know the title
It was a fairly big hit when it came out and has gotten a lot of tv play over the years, but it definitely doesn't have the staying power of many of these other movies.
What's the most highly recommended Woody Allen film? I haven't seen any of them.
could be. i seriously haven't seen it even on tv by accident. maybe it was a thing but like you said it doesn't really scream comedy movie that everyone should have seen
bags of sand
Idiocracy
Kung Pow
I think Annie Hall is the most popular one.
Yeah, Judd Apatow flicks like Superbad and 40 Yr Old Virgin and Pineapple Express were popular and millenials/older will more likely than not have seen them, but they're not really classics
Four Lions
What We Do In The Shadows
Not extremely popular ones, but very good and often quoted by those who have seen them.
i'd think be something like superbad might be more seen than those others that you mentioned
>encino man
why did you have to remind me that movie exists?
Adam Sandlers
What's wrong with encino man? :D
