Is this the only kino musical? All others I've seen have been either too campy or had unmemorable songs.

It's god tier. Why the fuck does it have a 55% on RT?
Wicker Man (1973) can be a musical.
sweeney todd was good
Hair (1979 )
A Chorus Line
Repo! The Genetic Opera is kino.
Phantom of the Paradise
Sorry OP, it is best musical and you wont find similar.
the album is still better though
overall yes but there's multiple performances on the film that are better. Pilot especially
Pointless trivia: Pilate was Fatman in Metal Gear Solid 2
My fair lady is undoubtably kino. Most other musicals are usually bleh.
John Legend fucking up Gethsemane on that shitty tv version they did last year was one of the funniest things I've ever seen happen on live tv
Yeah I was super disappointed watching the movie after listening to the album a bunch of times
I mean, not even mentioning the whole WE WUZ CHRIST n sheit diversity casting, I hate it when people try to sing Gethsemane and don't go for the high G5 note at the climax. If you can't do it, then don't even sing the song. It's been tradition since Ian Gillan
Concept? Gillan is a better Christ but Carl Anderson from the movie is a MUCH better Judas. I like some of the instrumentation on the film soundtrack too. Also caiaphas and annas are better. Other than that, most of the cast is the same (Mary, Pilate, etc)
Oh yeah, and it has "then we are decided" on the film version, which is incredible
Mary and Pilot are the only two actors to appear on both versions
I think what the film(s) have going for them that the album doesn't are some of the visuals, like in the 2000 version in the Simon song they all start handing out guns to each other as they praise Jesus which is a very nice extra layer to the themes, just little stuff like that.
>overall yes but there's multiple performances on the film that are better. Pilot especially
it's the same guy, barry dennen plays pilate on both the 1970 LP and in the 1973 film
i was never a big fan of the 2000 version, desu, but i can appreciate its overt gay-undertones
the '73 film has those weird anarchisms too and bits of humor that you don't get in the record, i think a bit part of it is the director's hand
each production, including the stage productions, has their own spin though and usually have a theme or try to update it and make it more politically relevant, they're hit or miss, i'm more of a fan of the traditional story and the basic story of the gospel
i still think it's the best depiction of jesus put on film and goes up against even films like the last temptation of christ
I know Dennen was on both versions, his performance in the film is just better
>i still think it's the best depiction of jesus put on film and goes up against even films like the last temptation of christ
I agree, there are too few human portrayals of Jesus, and I think the whole point of the gospel is lost when they make him more than just a man
Carl Anderson's Judas is the best performance I think that's ever been in a musical film.
youtube.com
yeah i appreciate the acknowledgement that jesus was fully HUMAN as well as fully god (according to the bible), and seeing his moments of doubts and contemplation in the garden, but i also really really like the sympathetic portrayal of judas and seeing things from his eyes
yes, best judas by far
he steals the show
it's a much harder role to sing (or at least sing well) compared to jesus, as well
jesus has the high scream in gethsemane, and in the 1970 album an even higher scream during "what's the buzz", but judas has a lot of high singing and a lot of it is not in falsetto
I like his accent (i never knew he was american until later) and his rich baritone voice
His performance during Pilate's dream is really great, and i love the little expressions he does at the end and the subtlety/emotion in his voice
>in the 1970 album an even higher scream during "what's the buzz"
oh man I forgot about that. That's what I like so much about Gillan's Jesus, all the improv and little "ooh"s and "aah"s he adds in
Hot Topic faggotry aside, pic related is genuinely animated musical kino. Pretty much every song is fantastic and extremely memorable, and the animation is gorgeous.
it's really crazy, and i don't think anyone else has done it in for that song in any other production of superstar. It's a full two notes higher than the high note in Gethsemane and with that really crazy wide vibrato he has so he sounds like a banshee. It's pretty sexual. I think in this version also, they switch the lyrics for Judas during "strange thing mystifying" so he says something like... "stroke you, kiss your hair" instead of "kiss you, stroke your hair" in other versions
And yeah it's a really funky song with that manic jumpy funky bassline and Gillan just grooving out with his little moans. I like how deep and rich his voice is too compared to some of the other Jesuses who are more true tenors and have a lighter, airier tone. Gillan just has this thick, warm, baritone and sounds soulful in the lower-medium register, plus his screams are notoriously crazy like on his Deep Purple tracks
Because it’s shit and the songs are boring and unmemorable
He was also based Dean Domino in Fallout NV
bad taste, the songs are classic (and have some pretty interesting time signatures, chords, etc but also really great and memorable melodies)
it's a divinely-inspired work of art
No the songs are shit. Get better taste tryhard nu-traditionalist.
you have bad taste, they're objectively great
Nigga this musical has always had diverse casting what are you on?
That’s why the RT score is so gre-
>the songs are boring and unmemorable
of all the shit to attack it on why did you choose this hill to die on
youtube.com
Because I’m not a mutt and I can speak from a non-brainwashed-retard perspective
fuck that's not the right version that's that fucking australian girl
>Pilot
>unmemorable
Wut? It's probably the most memorable musical I've encountered. And one of the few with a song that actually gets radio play to this day on non-showtune stations.
one of the best films I've ever seen, Bob Fosse was a genius
The romance plot at the end makes no sense
Oh but you are friend.
strangely enough it was enormously popular for like a decade in Scandinavia or something for some reason, I don't know why it was so successful there
>My fair lady is undoubtably kino.
yeah but it wasn't FORCED diversity. In the 73 film, Judas and Simon were GREAT and probably the best actors/singers in those roles imo, same for Annas who was arab. The cast were chosen based on MERIT, not for diversity points to appear woke and inclusive or whatever. They had talent and were the best choices for those roles, not because they were non-white.
fwiw, I think John Legend is a talented singer, but he was terribly miscast as Jesus, imo. The Judas (who was also black) was MUCH better. If there were a black actor/singer who played Jesus who was actually good for the role, I'd be all for it. For example, if Carl Anderson played him (which I think he did a few times, but I've never seen/heard him do it), he probably would have been fantastic. Also Anderson could act, whereas Legend wasn't very emotive imo
>rotten tomatoes
why are you talking about mutts for? I'm white
It's popular internationally actually and has been performed in many languages all over the world, which is a testament to its quality imo
In Spain in the mid 70s they did their own version called Jesuchristo Superstar starring a guy called Camilo Sesto as Jesus. He's actually pretty good imo, and I like some of the instrumentation (hammond organ on gethsemane, etc)

He's actually not Jewish and he's made several 10/10 movies, pleb.
Watch Cria Cuervos if you haven't already.
Man I was all over the musical adaptation of Sweet Smell of Success when I was in high school, but it just doesn't hold up. This is the only song I still kind of like

I don't mind WE WUZ if it gets you the best Judas portrayal.

Not sure if I’d call Legend’s role forced diversity casting so much as it’s forced celebrity casting. I agree with you, he wasn’t right for the part at all despite him being a good singer on his own. But he’s a big name to draw in an audience.
yeah like i said, he's my favorite judas BY FAR but he had the acting chops and talent to back it up, unlike john legend
carl anderson was based
for me, it's steve balsamo

It's 10/10.
I could not sit through that garbage. Sorry, Alan.
