watch the original film instead.
If you already did, go ahead, won't hurt anybody.

Fpbp
Also watch Samurai Rebellion.

Watch the original 1962 film, one of the GOAT movies

This is a shitty remake, watch the original instead, it's one of the best jap films ever made.

>I loved 13 Assassins

Assuming you mean the shitty remake, then sure you'll probably like this too.

Good taste.

I'm fairly new to Japanese films, with the exception of Miike and Kurosawa. Any Japkino I should watch? Older films are fine, but if you've got any relatively recent ones that'd be great

watch Ozu films

Yasujiro Ozu's films.
Battle Royale
A Colt Is My Passport
The Yakuza Papers movies
Shin Godzilla

Here's some well known classics to get you started:
Tokyo Story
An Autumn Afternoon
Ugetsu
Onibaba
Branded to Kill
Sword of Doom
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Hana-bi (Fireworks)
Sonatine
Battle Royale
All About Lily Chou-Chou
Love Exposure

Belladonna of Sadness

This is a good chart. Kobayashi, Ozu and Mizoguchi are great older, accessible directors. Koreeda is a good newer one.

>Battle Royale

Don't fall for this meme. Battle Royale felt like a live action anime. Absurd plot, over acted, terrible effects, like Japan's equivalent of syfy original.

>Absurd plot, over acted,
I think that these only work in the film's favor, considering what it's trying to be. But it definitely isn't for everyone.

Watch the original. Miike's version is fucking gay.

What's the Japanese movie where the woman attacks people by shoving her vagina in their face? I like that one.

Sonatine and Hana-bi are good starting points if you're looking for more recent (90s) kinos.

>only a handful of movies post 2000
What went wrong with Japanese cinema?

You could ask the same of Hollywood and European cinema.

I will only recommend Jap comfycore:
Wood job
Linda Linda Linda
Waterboys
Robo G
Gentle breeze by the village
Our little Sister
Midnight diner: the movie

We know what went wrong there. What happened to Japan?

Haven't watched it, but I have hardly ever heard of it so it might be bad
Fun fact: After watching 13 Assassins during high school, I went to video rental shop to get this one and instead they gave me the original.
Based VRS got me into film. I don't even know how come they had that, but I am thankful

Recession, anime and idols

If you want something more "experimental" than classic Japanese films, try Shinya Tsukamoto. Very energetic

Watch the original. The remake is strictly inferior.
>I loved 13 Assassins
Then again, you have shit taste so whatever.

Yes he is good. Is that new film of his that was in Venice last year somewhere on torrents?
