??? i praised the game in the same breath. i played it all the way through including john's homesteading bit. if you think pressing a button to hammer a fucking fence was engaging strictly from a gameplay standpoint you have a learning disability. missions regularly boiled down to the most interesting thing being that a wave of gang members was coming from a new direction so you had to run into some other cover.

man what's your obsession? you seriously think the core game here is solid? your breath smells like rockstar games dick. horsemanship and to a lesser extent simply walking around feels like you're moving through mud. the crime and punishment system is downright insulting with witnesses literally spawning just out of sight to walk on your crime scene and lawmen are impossibly omniscient about arthur's crimes. dueling, one of the most fun pastimes in the first game, can no longer be forced through poker cheating and occurs only a tiny handful of times in the entire game otherwise. again, i'm not saying the game itself is bad. it is carried and carried admirably by the story, cast, performances, music, and visuals. but gameplay? horseshit.

dueling happens often with low honor though. to the point where nearly every time i enter a saloon somebody wants to challenge me

i don't know anything about whoever you picked for arthur, but John seems like the kind of guy who doesn't really understand the world, and a lot goes over his head, but he's aware of it and just tries to make up for it by doing what he perceives to be the right thing so that he at least has a purpose in the world, and Urban seems like he could pull that off well, but a lot of the performance would depend on the cast around him because of the pulled back way he'd have to play the part

The visuals, the voice acting, the general atmosphere, and the soundtrack are all 10/10 but the gameplay is just not enjoyable. And since RDR 2 is a game that's a pretty big misstep. I'd give it a solid 6/10.

If you read the journal Arthur sees Charles as a foil to himself. Where Arthur struggles to "do the right thing" Charles will do it instinctively. And people like that do exist.
