Smart phones have become so addicting that now most people do everything on them, including talking to people 3 feet away. This means everyone is slumped over, running into things, staring down at their phone. Smart phones even have cameras at the top edge of them so people can see whats in front of them. But now through AR, they can collect coins or some shit.

Communication in society is breaking down due to less and less need to talk as typing is preferred. Education takes a hard dive as kids can't get off their phones and prefer it to studying. Zombies exist as the souless wanderers who stare at their phone all day.

But one man has broken the cycle and plans to put an end to humanities reliance on phones.....

Techno Zombies could be pretty cool. Like it's a dystopic future and smart phones have turned into a chip in your brain that does everything for you. However one day the chips get hacked or break and that creates the horde of zombies you need.

Have them in a setting where they wouldn't get BTFO by a military or armed citizens. Incorporate other forms of transmission like them coughing/sneezing/spitting rabid foam/vomiting or contaminating food and water supplies. Also have vermin and mosquitos carry and spread it.

Zombies are subconsciously about the decay of society and perfectly fit in times when nothing's there's no ideological tension and everything is just slowly decaying, like the 80s or the 00s. In good times like the 90s or heavily ideologically polarized times like the 10s it doesn't speak to people in the same way.
