it's not just that, there's dozens of other weird random edits that serve no purpose or actively weaken scenes

My question still stands. The edits don't necessarily add to the story but they contribute to the tone, and their placements aren't random or purposeless. Also the spider walk isn't at all out of place, if anything it serves as the turning point in the story when the paranormal phenomena becomes explicit, because that's what starts happening in the next scene.
