The movie from what I remember is better visual vice. But the show seem to more "deeper" if that's the right word for it. Even though there's seem to be more cgi than i'd like. But that's how it's done, so I'm not gonna complain too much.

According to the books paralleling the show's events, it is supposed to be Stone in the Wood.
In those, each fire of resistance lighting up also causes a dream-etching of a mural representing each clan joining up, and Hunter's death and the shard's reveal results in the prophecy etching. With how the show's been rearranging the book's material though, we'll probably be seeing them find the prophecy wall in the Season 2 premiere or something.

Not related to most of your post, but it really bugged me in the first movie just how useless Jen was. Kira did 90% of everything, even her sacrifice was only necessary because Jen fucked up. He was raised by the mystics and was taught numbers and words, but he only uses his skills ONCE throughout the entire movie. His bland personality also doesn't help endear him to me.

I generally agree, although he never really grated on me he also never left an impression either. His existence prior to his adventure was extremely sheltered and the mystics by-and-large don't care for action or adventure so it also would be strange for him to have any skills in that regard. To play advocate for him though the adventure is very fast, there wouldn't really be enough time for him to have an arc and the fact that his skills don't fit too well into the adventure makes sense, the only way for him to be interesting would be to see how he grows as a character after having finished his quest.

The skeksis save the show from becoming a potential snore fest.

Hollywood latched onto CGI not because of cost effectiveness, a simple search in the subject will prove otherwise, but so that hollywood would have a stranglehold on big budget spectacles.

1. With practical, you have visionary geniuses who could leverage their weight on the studio if they needed to. This happened in the past with Rey Harryhausen and happened in toho with Eiji Tsubaraya. Without a strong visionary figurehead leading a pack, moat studios will bend to whatever the execs want. You cant replace jim henson with sran winston, the films aesthetic would shift dramatically. But you can switch one CGI studo with another.

2. Since good CGI needs millions of dollars to utilyze for the longest time, hollywood could retain a "feel" on movies by making younger audiences so used to seeing CGI, be it good or bad, that they will associate it with good movie making, which can only be done in high hollywood studios.

I think this show being made the way that it was is a big deal, and we will see a return to practical effects enhanced with cgi more often than not. The work that went into this is of the highest quality, hope to see more. And the director worked on all ten episodes that's crazy. He needs to return for season 2.

The dichotomy between the Skesis and the Mystics is not as simple as Evil vs Good. The Urskeks were split in a much more complicated fashion, and that's part of the tragedy.

The world of Thra is more like the wheel of the heavens or the universe cycles of the Jains than a fight between good and evil.

From an earlier state of perfect good, Thra has been falling for some thousand years into perfect darkness (the downward spiral of the wheel, from the top point of perfect good can come only a continued revolution, downwards to the bottom). What Len aimed for in the film was a return upwards, the continued revolution of the wheel towards good and the highest point. But his conception was basic and ignorant. What he got was a return to the center spoke of the wheel; the point of perfect understanding and balance, where the illusion of 2 is dispelled, and there are no longer mystics and skesis, but only Urskeks.

But make no mistake, the Skesis are not the "evil" half of the Urskeks, and the Mystics are not the "good" half.

Rather, the Skeksis are the active, the worldly, the involved element. Action. And the Mystics are the contemplative, the spiritual, the compassionate (but detached) element. Emotion(?)

In the first age, the "perfect" age, both played splendid roles in a wonderful domain. But with time came decay into an age of darkness.

The Mystics are completely passive, and have (for all purposes) given up on the world altogether. For the creators and maintainers of this world, that is of course unacceptable. You might say that they are fine persons in and of themselves, and disengagement is fine. But consider the difference between the Mahayana and Theravada conceptions of Buddhahood. To the Theravada, a spirit can become a buddha by attaining enlightenment. Done and done. But to the Mahayana, no spirit could possibly be worthy of enlightenment if it would go on to enlightenment but leave the rest of existence behind to suffer. It's contradictory. So how could the Mystics, given their position in the world, possibly be "good" and yet abandon the world completely? Especially when they abandon it to their more actively evil halves?
