I think the only hard part will be that much of the Dune story takes place in the mind of the characters because they've all been trained so well at being deceptive or trained to detect deception. I actually didn't mind the way lynch used voice over for thoughts but many people consider the voice over lazy film making with films like a clockwork orange being the exception.

I don't think they can, I think it will either work well with the pacing of the scene or it will kind of bomb. He is splitting the novel into two movies so I'm guessing if the voice over or whatever is used in the first movie doesn't click they can change it somehow for the second half.
I don't remember which half of the book uses more thought narrative to push the plot along but I think it might be the first half before they move in with the tribe.

I think dune is a pretty great novel in isolation from the dune series. Many agree, many disagree but I think its a cool story to tell.

Not the user to whom you're responding but this is totally wrong. The book is an old timey elf fairytale style. Compare what happens when they meet Galadriel in the forest and the elves there. The way Gandalf is is very different from what he is in the movies. I love LOTR and I love the adaptation, but the books and the movies have completely different feels to them.
