Han should've died in RotJ in a heroic sacrifice to save the others. It was the only logical conclusion to his character arc. From a man who doesn't give two shits about the rebellion to someone who'd give their own life for the cause.

Nope, his death was never planned by Lucas, but Ford did want Han to die during the freezing process in TESB. He tried the same logic for RotJ, but was rebuffed. However, test audiences did see a version of RotJ where Lando and the Falcon did not make it out of DSII, but when viewers gasped and felt it ruined the movie, they changed it. Remnants of foreshadowing remain, as when Han remarks to Leia that he's got a funny feeling that he will never she his ship again.
