I think its popular mostly because of her style and wardrobe , the depiction of a 'modern woman' young and taking care of herself while getting money from men while not fucking them. A cock-teasing goldigger was a bit of novelty. The movie really ruined the story by having it end with her changing her ways and staying with the George Peppard character , in the book she just leaves NY for an uncertain future in South America.

Agreed, it was vapid normie garbage. Her movies in general, at least the ones I saw, weren't really that diverse to begin with (I'm fine with chalking it up to Hollywood's narrow mindedness/female oppression) but this just sucked. Shame because there are movies she made that deserve much more praise.
