Yeah. I think the logic was that him being a "lowly store clerk" was "demeaning." Like "he should have a good job, like be a doctor or a lawyer, or a CEO, and have lots of money!" because Hari Kondabolu's parents weren't taxi drivers or convenience store workers, they were doctors. An Indian character being a working class guy is "disgraceful" in his eyes. All of this ignores the fact that Apu is a pretty good role-model because he's a hardworking man who is also well-educated and liked by other characters and has a wife and family that love him. But it's bad because he works a dirty poor person job, how demeaning.
