The split here is, and has always been...teaching creativity. You can teach the shit out of technique, as this movie clearly documents. But then there's that one motherfucker who didn't even try, and didn't even care. Who just wandered in from a different place. That's Jimi Hendrix or Cecil Taylor...or Sun Ra. Imagination will always one up discipline. That's the tragedy of this movie...music has math in it, but really...it's a feeling learned by listening.

Ironically that's the whole point, the film appeals to pretty much anyone but hardcore jazz fans and/or musicians, since it serves as a metaphor that exaggerates and due to narrative decisions isn't accurate on a technical level at all.
