Superman TAS was better

watching cartoons lmao

It existed before zoomers and 90s born queers ruined everything

nah.

I’ve literally been watching through it the last week or so for the first time in probably 20 years and it’s virtually flawless

nah i rewatched the original run about 9 years back and it was still good. The episodes felt so much shorter thoughh

Eh, I remember watching this cartoon as a kid, the target audience. It was always excellent from my perspective. It had a very comic book without being hokey feel. I appreciated that it didn't try to dumb it down or make it too kiddy, while staying away from being too try hard. It was a cartoon about superheroes. It was serious but not too serious. Just well made and executed.

For me, yes.

OK I guess it never hit the same heights as "Heart of Ice" but it never sank as low as "I've got Batman in my basement". It was a more consistent show. I will say Clancy Browns Luthor and Ironsides Darkseid were every bit as good as Hamill's Joker

Poison Ivy was so fucking hot in that show

>ova tier animation
TMS really loved batman

Spider-Man the animated series was better

For it's time it was groundbreaking, dated today and not as "dark" as you remember it and still very much the Saturday morning cartoon format.

I tried watching this and Mask of the Phantasm, and could only do it to around episode 12. It's extremely formulaic. Villains tend to have incompetent henchmen that speak with Brooklyn accents. Every time the Joker appears he gets some henchmen or robots to follow him around to steal or kidnap somebody, Batman beats them, Joker pulls out a remove with a big red button that makes some kind of toy attack Batman, Batman beats that, Joker tries to escape but trips and loses. There was an episode where Scarecrow is some skinny dumb guy with the typical fat and thin stupid duo. The one that did it for me was when some guy in the sewers used children to fetch him food, and Batman said that he had seen horrible things but this, THIS is what did it for him. I couldn't take it anymore. It's still better than the average cartoon I guess.

I've recently been watching this show in order, I'm at about episode 65 (the end of Season 1), then Mask of Phantasm came out so I'll check that out soon.

Fantastic show. Very rarely there will be deaths but a lot of the dialogue and plot-lines are interesting enough for even adults to watch with their kids.

My favorite episodes (in order of airdate) of Season 1 are:

Two-Face: Part 1
Two-Face: Part 2
It's Never Too Late
Heart of Ice
Beware the Gray Ghost
Perchance to Dream
Robin's Reckoning: Part 1
Robin's Reckoning: Part 2
The Laughing Fish
If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?
Almost Got 'Im
I Am the Night
The Man Who Killed Batman
Harley and Ivy

Check 'em out if you want a starting point for this show.

Part of it was the regulations for cartoons at the time plus the new standards for cartoons due to syndication having been popular for just a few years at that point.

Think it was the Gummi Bears that may have been the first cartoon to base its budget on syndication, before then it was routine to base the budget on ad sales for the initial airing.

Made it easier for a show like Batman to get the budget it deserved, plus the lack of wackiness meant you didn't have characters screaming all the time, so you could have better voice actors on due to it not straining their voices the way many cartoons would. Then you also had the regulations against guns in cartoons which meant the writers had to be more creative about the villains killing/hurting people.

It didn't talk down to the 9 year old audience.

Nope

It's actually aged even better

>Then you also had the regulations against guns in cartoons which meant the writers had to be more creative about the villains killing/hurting people.
I mean the opening scene is three mobsters blowing up a bank then shooting at Batman with a Thompson sub machine gun.

squiggly outlines ruins its perfection

Bro I saw Batman Mask of the Phantasm for my 8th birthday in theaters. It was still one of my best birthdays. I owned it on VHS after that, it was one of my favorite movies for over a decade

jesus this show is ugly

people forget how not great the first season or two is. there's a few stand out episodes like heart of ice, but the show doesn't get consistently great until season 3.

Think it was that you couldn't have the bullets actually hurt someone or some such bullshit like that. Was why a lot of kid's shows started having laser guns instead of regular guns.

The gun regulations were cited by the writers for the invention of the Joker fish. A way of killing without using guns.

youre ugly

best episode

Absolute kino episode

Yeah, I really enjoyed the 1940s noir influenced style of the show.

Superman was alright but I feel like the writers struggled to do as well with the character. It's easy to write Batman but it's the hardest thing in the world to write Superman well. Only the GOATs have managed to write compelling Superman stories.

Robin's Reckoning for me
Great history, great animation
perfect episode

>90 bucks for the blurays
Fuck me man.

The background art design and lighting, the 1940s noir atmosphere, absolute high quality animation, writing and sound design. I unironically use this as an example of passion in mainstream entertainment media.

This and Lord of the Rings are perfect examples of care and love going into a commercial product and how that actually enhances and helps it be successful.

Nobody likes the first episode? I thought it was quintessential Batman kino.

they knew what they were doing from day one

I like all of the episodes.

So everyone ITT watched Batman TAS, Superman TAS, then New adventures of batman and robin, then justice league then justice league unlimited then batman beyond right?

I watched all except superman TAS

I highly recommend it and it gives context to his relationship with Batman.

Are any of them worth watching? My parents had me reading books and watching only documentaries when I was young so I didn't get to watch anything like this. I kind of feel outside :(

I read shit tons of books voluntarily as a kid dont feel too bad, i just also got to watch saturday morning cartoons and reruns. I would argue that they are all worth watching, with the new adventures and batman beyond being the weakest of the group (buts still being excellent).

>that pan up to the squatting gargoyle

was this kino?

You get to see wonder woman flirting with batman in justice league as well (including loli version)

isnt batman old enough to be her dad?

is this canon?

Thanks user, I've been sick of new western media for a while now and these "older" cartoons seem just about perfect.

Burton made it possible.

That's what girls want.

Barbara is at least between 18-21 and Bruce is in his 30s.

>introduces Harley into canon
>sets the definitive backstory for Mr Freeze and Scarecrow
>features the best and longest running interpretations of Batman and Joker
For a 'kids' cartoon to have such an influence on the main story is unprecedented.

God I wish that were me

It's really good, but like batman beyond and jl/jlu there are some dud episodes

BTAS actually has the most duds of the lot, it really took them a while to figure things out. By the time they got to Superman and Beyond they were far more consistent, especially the animation

Bump

the toys for BTAS were fucking dope

bump for keeping kino alive, and proving the capkino exists

remind me what they were like?

I had all of the originals as a kid, and of course I've lost them all now that I'm older. Do you know if they go for a high price nowadays? I wouldn't mind collecting all of those original figures for my future kids to play with someday.

Do you remember that episode about the Invisible Man when he gives a little girl a pearl necklace?

yeah i remember thinking that the invisible man was screwed over by the court system.

>imagine being retarded
this guy doesn't have to.

Get brain cancer.

thoughts on question/huntess? cute or cringe?

also for me its wonder woman

Some of the early episodes are a bit hit and miss. Especially the early Joker episodes: Christmas with the Joker feels like it came from an entirely different show and the next few have virtually no plot other than Batman fights the joker. It isn't until Joker's Favour that the writers figured out how to do a good joker story. Plus, don't get me started on I've Got Batman in My Basement or that fucking Island of Dr Moreau episode.

But yeah once they got over the initial few episodes (and even then there's some great ones early on like Heart of Ice, Feat of Clay and Two Face) it became a fucking masterpiece.

>Yea Forums suddenly likes cartoons

>that episode where Harley and Poison Ivy "enchant" Bruce Wayne and then go shopping with his credit card
>the one where rehabilitated Harley goes shopping with her dogs and tries to stay on the straight and narrow, then is being thrown back into a life of crime because of a series of whacky misunderstandings

Are there some other "unusual" episodes that were sort of slice-of-life and heavy on comedy? Those also had Bruce Wayne interact with the villains in a different way than usual.

A shit load of versions of Batman that didn't even appear in the show.

Aw shit, I 'member this one. I always thought the face shield was fucking rad for some reason.

I had the version of this with bat ears on the bubble helmet

I love that show too but don't be a retard, retard.

And then the toy companies started consulting on the films and that's how we got Batman and Robin. Seriously, Joel Schumacher described how during pre-production he heard executives say 'toyetic' for the first time in his life.

DESPITE

But i think mine was the 1989 live action batman

it just was

ok, so i might be in the minority. I really liked the christimas with the joker (has funny jingle bells remix). i agree it is tonally very different from the rest of the show but i just assumed that it was a comfy throwback to the 60s era cartoon. I didnt like batman in my basement but it didnt bother me because i considered it just an example of wanting to get the children in the audience to more directly insert themselves into the shows narrative.

Arent those from the new adventures of batman and robin? as for suggestions there is the return of poison ivy episode, and the catwoman episodes from BTAS.

>This is what happens when people have ambition and drive.
And Japanese animators to actually make it a reality.

It's about as good as kid's tv show can be. The violence is a bit trimmed down but everything else is fantastic. It's like a large collection of really great short stories (and a handful of bad ones especially when the show was finding its feet) starring Batman. The characterisation and storytelling is really on point. You get a fantastic 22 minute or two-part 45 minute short story about either Batman or one of his villains and they're really well-told stories.

Plus the art design and animation is really solid. They painted the whole show on black paper to give it a dark, shadowy look and it still looks good today. Like iconic, perfect Batman good.

However watching it today on dvd and blu-ray you'll get all the episodes in chronological production order and it's clear in the early episodes that they didn't quite know what they had at first and most of the bad episodes are towards the start. Not all are bad, in fact some of the show's best eps are at the start: Heart of Ice, Feet of Clay, Two-Face, etc. But you've also got shit like I've Got Batman in My Basement and it's clear that they didn't know what to do with the Joker until about half-way through season 1 (first good Joker ep is Joker's Favour for the record). It really wasn't designed to be binge-watched. It was made so you could catch any episode of it on tv and be able to enjoy it individually without any context (other than the 2 parters).

Great show though, one of the best kids shows ever made. It's one of those ones that took kids seriously and gave them something borderline adult. It's honestly the best adaptation of the character so far.

Attached: batman.gif (500x366, 510K)

animation was only good in like a handful of episodes. warners had some janky hook up with that shit. VERY FLOATY

character designs needed more lines. shit looked half finished. otherwise same problems batman tas had

Gtfo le edgy zoomer.

Agreed. It depends on which animation studio they gave which episode too. I maintain that some episodes like Feet of Clay look absolutely gorgeous though. Still I think the art design and story-telling alone still make even the badly animated eps worth watching.

It was dark and mature for a kids cartoon I still have PTSD when I watch the orange bat episode it was so good

>That smile at the end.

Anime doesn't have to "sneak things in."

Never watched this show as a kid but watched it about a year ago and it was great

Bruce Timm's 'normal' art is about 90 percent horny sexualized females so it's no wonder some of this seeped into the show

Attached: Supergirl.jpg (912x1250, 101K)

Neither millennials nor women were involved in its creations.

this, tried watching it a few years ago, it's very slow, predictable and cringy. Great for a kids demographic though, basically like shounen anime

Voice acting is the thing that stands out in my mind

>they could unironically just adapt TAS into their cinematic universe almost word-to-word and have absolute kino cinematic universe, but choose to make some edgy and then marvel-like trash
Fucking hell. Worst timeline.

FUCK WOMEN

Fuck unions and all that commie kike rule shit.

The music was a big part of its success. Orchestral music will always raise the quality of animation up a notch and encourages audiences of all demographics to take the show much more seriously. Shirley Walker's success with the music for this show can't be understated, she had a fantastic ability to orchestrate things to make the orchestra sound twice as big as it actually was. Plus new themes for every character and original music for every episode.
It's a shame Warner Bros. refuses to cough up the cash for an orchestra anymore because I think that give them a real edge in quality over the competition. But it's almost unheard of today for anyone to use an orchestra for television, especially animation.

>Fuck unions and all that commie kike rule shit.

as i recall from the commentary i watched on the DVD ages ago, it was a miracle this shot made it in (pointing the gun directly at the camera). in general i think they got away with a surprising level of blood and violence for the 90s.

They got around it by not really making him Superman. He's a million times weaker in TAS, and they've said it was a deliberate decision. He has to wear a spacesuit, for example.

There were several times where they were flat-out told 'no, you can't do that' by the censors, so their solution was to fall within guidelines but do it in a way that was somehow more affecting to the audience.
An example is in the episode where Batgirl dreams about her death. They originally animated it so that you saw Batgirl fall onto the car from a pedestrian perspective. This was nixed and so instead they put the perspective from inside the car, which was somehow okay despite being more shocking.

The video game based on the cartoon was top tier as well. I loved how the levels had title cards done in the same style as the ones for the cartoon episodes.

Which one was better, the SNES or Genesis version?

Attached: Annie03.png (1440x1080, 1.15M)

Genesis

I forgot about this game! used to play it on this weird gaming channel when I was a kid.
genesis no doubt.
That being said they went super overkill on that bloated arkham franchise but the first one arkham asylum is legit.

My fuckin nigga

I only had Genesis so I wouldn't know. Great soundtrack though, and great gameplay. Probably one of the best co-op games on Genesis too.

Arkham knight is free on ps4 this month I was gonna check it out is it worth it? Never played them

>They can't hire Bruce Timm et al because of animation union resrictions.
what kind of restrictions?

SOUL

I'd read up on the patches.
I think that's the one that when it came out was just flat out fucking broken on most platforms so no one really played it.
Asylum was kino
City was okay just kind of ends on a flat note.
Origins was fun enough just for story but that's about it.

I re-watch batman TAS, superman, batman beyond, and justice league every year

genesis version was too hard and made me cry

>We are together again my love.

Lol that was weird. Not expecting to see a full blown sex scene come out of a a children's franchise

>tfw The Question will never have a movie of his own
>not because the guy who created him was a right wing zealot who loved Ayn Rand
>not even because The Question is characterized as being a conspiracy theorist and a hero for being one
>but because while "in costume" The Question is faceless so they can't capitalize on getting some A-list actor to play him, nor can they have him do awesome stunts like Spider-Man to make up for that since The Question has no superpowers

>Asylum was kino
Absolutely. It's a top notch game.

>City was okay just kind of ends on a flat note.
I enjoyed it and I'll mostly agree with that statement. The final fight isn't great, but the end credits are.

>>but because while "in costume" The Question is faceless so they can't capitalize on getting some A-list actor to play him
Nah. You just need the right actor. People said as much about Dredd, and Urban didn't take the mask off once. Shame the studio didn't support the release and we won't get a follow up film.

>"Oopsie."
Hamill was such a great Joker.

It's just such a short game.
I feel like clayface should have been like the middle and it's over.
I was like wtf really?
Well collectibles I guess.

>Asylum was kino
Man but the story was bad and the boss battles were awful. City tried to fix both of these but the story was just as ridiculous.

Fool, if you think those are small, you've never seen tits.

I heard some rumor about J. Jonah Jameson being an "Alex Jones" type conspiracy podcaster in a future Spider-Man movie. I think that sort of role would actually fit The Question perfectly - he'd do all the less-than-legal investigative journalism while "faceless", then just casually go live on air and report on all the dirt he found as Vic Sage, citing "anonymous sources".

JJJ is just Alex Jones in Spider-Man PS4 so yeah I could see it.

Star, Raven, Barbara, Harley. Huntress, Daphne, and Zatanna.
Dick gets all the best girls.
Shame he's the butt of every joke in everything he's in.

*Sniff*

love for the source material, great art direction, great writing, focus on the characters, both heroes and villians.

>Can learn a language by kissing

This is straight up some anime stuff. Hot race of sexy alien girls can learn a language by making out, because of course. Not that I'm complaining, my cock is happy about it.

Funny to think she goes on to have a family, grandkids and ends up a babushka.

Baste.

I love the theory that shows Selina dyed her hair blonde right at the beginning of the series.

Which show?

Bruce Timm is so fucking cheeky.

people put in effort.
? Was there some after the show book?

Either JL or JLU

>Was there some after the show book?
No, but she is present in Batman Beyond. As well as her granddaughters.

Fuck you Tom King.

what a power move

All that for Kori not to marry him.

Not just art deco. GOTHIC art deco. Such a pure kino fusion of aesthetics.

Compare BtAS to any of the Marvel cartoons of the time. It completely and utterly eclipses them in terms of animation, voice talent and story.

Babs was too good for Dick.
And Bruce with Diana is still the best bat couple.
Fuck Salena.

Attached: Barb.jpg (1280x2950, 267K)

Mr. Freeze in the comics and BTAS is absolute kino and very relateable now as an adult with a wife who's been in coma for 2 years.

;_;

Fuck off Tankie

NMUH DUCIIKK AHHHHHHH

Yeah, Knight is good; Asylum and City are also great.

City is my favorite out of them

The episode where Penguin tries to go legit is one of the best ones IMO, and how ze elite end up abusing him and turning him back to crime.

It was made by people who actually care
Passion is what separates art from a product

100%

It saddens me to realize fewer and fewer artists grow up in today's society.

i think the problem of adapting tas or even just using it as a reference is that it would be pretty close to the mcu. imagine all the bitching from Yea Forums and Yea Forums if they had batman making quips like they were willing to do in the tas stuff

>who is andrea romano

The one episode that blew my mind was the mobster redemption story with the priest that lost his leg.

Also the clayface origin 2 part should have been the basis of a film itself.

In retrospect who the f was the target audience for some of these episodes.

Batman Beyond gave me nightmares. Both the radioactive corpse and Ink turning that guy into slime scared me so much it took years before I could acknowledge that they were just cartoons.

True Batman fans I guess, along with giving kids kino they'll remember till the end

The comic writers said TAS is basically the closest adaption there's been, so even they liked it, and comic writers are hard to please when you use their stuff as a basis

Unlikely, i hated the show as a kid and i love it now.

>pregnet

batman falcon punching scarecrow right after this is great

>when you fall in love with the asscheek of a shapeshifter criminal

Tim had a hard life, indeed.
