I feel like that creature is going to say something of the based and redpilled variety
What the fuck was this asshole's problem?
TRIAL BY STONE
I swear they modeled Rodan from KOTM on this guy.
damn Chamberlain looked like THAT
Rodan friend! Help Godzilla! Want peace between Rodan and Godzilla! HmmmMMMMmm.
This sounded very cute, I must say
How did Pegg do the mMMMMmm so well? It sounds literally exactly like the original voice actor from the 1982 film.
Trial by stone!
dont wanna mess with him
How much screentime does he have?
I'm one episode in and he seems to be one of the two main Skeksis along with the Scientist.
Trial by Stone Cold!
He was based and everyone else wasn't. It's a frustrating existence.
downloaded this for based anya but it's fucking puppets or some shit?? wtf
welp guess its worth a watch then
>dark crystal
Much preferred Labyrinth.
This is bait.
a lot
Simon Pegg is unrecognizable doing the voice, he sounds exactly like the 1982 film
First time ever hearing Anya Taylor-Joy in her real accent in this show, she has a nice voice.
based
Mmmmmmmmm, based.
What's her real accent though? She speaks both English and Spanish fluently doesn't she, and grew up in England.
I've only ever heard her do American accents in films.
Her real accent seems to have that transatlantic tinge to it, which is to be expected.
A vaguely English accent.
CHAMBERLAIN!
MMMMMM?
Is there any obnoxious modern social commentary or is it just pure fantasy kino?
GARTHIM WARRIORS!
I would literally beat the shit out of some big goofy Skeksis faggot. I shove their stupid goofy beak up their tight asshole
Labyrinth is a bad movie to watch when having opiate withdrawals.
(((Skeksis)))
someone photoshop him holding a list of data showing the statistics of crimes committed by podlings compared to the rest of the population
Very creepy design, spider, crab and beetle all in one.
Is that because of David Bowie's codpiece?
I HATE YOUR WHIMPER
>tfw no gelfling gf to dreamfast with
not a good feeling bros
If this is your primary concern you would always find a reason to not enjoy something.
Absolutely based character.
only on episode 1, they mention the skeksi came from outerspace, where are their counterpart slug dudes with the 4 arms?
ANOTHER WORLD
ANOTHER TIME
it's a prequel
One turns up later. They're presumably off in the same place they were in the film. They don't do a whole lot because the drive and passion part of the original race was split into the Skeksis half.
All the Gelfling ladies have such nice soothing voices. They did a good job casting.
these guys ? the skeksis make them eventually, they didnt come with them. their design is based off creatures from their home world though.
oh, so they are just way off in the mountain chilling and making little rock gardens like in the movie? i just thought it was odd the intro would mention how the skeksi came from outer space, i thought the skeksis and their counterparts came to thra together, then they split into 2 species after arriving
>tfw Simon Pegg is Chamberlain
I was a bit surprised to find out that MySundae was voicing the main character Deet. She sounds so young and nothing like her GoT character.
Really doesn't sound like him, I wouldn't have guessed.
And Luke Skywalker is the Scientist
the original species was the urskeks or something. then they used the crystal to remove the "taint" from their souls so that they could return home (they were banned from their homeworld for having imperfect souls) but all this did was separate them into the two species each having different traits.
>urskeks
ah yes, the arse keks
if hmmmmMMMmmm will become a meme I will kill myself
i can stand them using slaves, i can stand them turning slaves into mindless zombies for life extending potions, but i wont stand for them abusing those poor potato bugs!
Yes and?
are those oozing pustules really necessary on that one sexy?
is this the birth of based mmMMMMMMmm posting?
That makes more sense, I can hear the Joker in his voice.
I hate your whimper!
>HmmmMMMMMmmmmm
reminder
anyone want to finish this?
Bad news, it;s been a meme for anyone who saw the film for the last 37 years
>NOOO JIMU
I had never actually heard Awkwafina speak before this, so I was surprised her voice as one of the Skeksis is so raspy, I went to the cast list thinking it was an older woman, like a Doris Grau type. Is she putting on a voice or does she always sound like that?
He was already the most memetic character from the Dark Crystal film, with this new show he's destined to be memed up.
MINE!
I- I- aaaAAAAHAFFHGHHaa-a-a-a-ahh-a
Pretty cool seeing him in the show in his prime as Emperor.
and voiced by Lucius Malfoy, too.
I'm only an episode in but I don't think I saw this guy yet? Given he had an important role in the film it would be odd to not have him in the show.
This worries me too. I don't see him in the credits.
Godzilla would definitely win Trial by Stone.
Is this meant to be a one and done season or a multi season show?
I think Kairos doesnt feel so well on that pic.
is the netflix series shit or nah? is there any blacks in it (black voice actors) are there black gelflings? is there a female skeksis
isnt it a prequel?
One of the skeksis is voiced by a female (the one in the original film was a dude), other than that, no.
Die.
But it's also a female with a ridiculously raspy deep voice.
Yeah, but the protagonist was a silly bitch boy. Other than that... holy fuck the genius of king shit Henson. I'll watch Fraggle rock way into my 70's, he's that good.
Deet is voiced by a mulatto.
The Ornamentalist is male, not female
Props to the Skeksis voice actors, they do a great job. The Gelfings actors by and large just have to be generally "nice", the Skeksis actors not all have to do crazy voices that often don't sound anything like themselves, but have to also hew closely to the voices of the original film.
I meant the Collector, who is new for the show but fits right in. I don't think any of the Skeksis have a "gender" in that way anyway, given they're not a real race but made from the UrSkeks being split in two.
All the Gelflings just sound "pleasantly British" anyway. You wouldn't notice.
who based /urru/ here? lets chant
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
one episode in and the series already retroactively made him in the film an even bigger cunt, I love it
OOOOOAAAAAAAHHH
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
>Human performers inside the puppets supplied basic movement for the larger creatures, which in some cases was dangerous or exhausting; for example, the Garthim costumes were so heavy that the performers had to be hung up on a rack every few minutes to rest while still inside the costumes.
>Each Skeksis suit required a main performer, whose arm would be extended over his or her head in order to operate the creature's facial movements, while the other arm operated its left hand. Another performer would operate the Skeksis' right arm. The Skeksis performers compensated for their lack of vision by having a monitor tied to their chests
>The Mystics were the hardest creatures to perform, as the actors had to walk on their haunches with their right arm extended forward, with the full weight of the head on it. Henson himself could hold a position in a Mystic costume for only 5–10 seconds.
This sounds horrendous. I assume they made great improvements in comfort for the puppeteers for the series after nearly 40 years of tech improvements.
this
It is but I don't know if it's a single season prequel or meant to go on for a few years.
UUUAAAAAHHHH
no u
I saw a documentary on the original dvd where they had to get acrobats to play the Mystics because their stances were so crazy.
He had Podling juice withdrawal.
i feel like these questions are ALL coming from a very dark place
To do all this torturous shit and still "act" with the puppets is the impressive part. Makes me glad the credits for the show list the voice actor and the principal puppeteer for each character side by side.
Yeah, his arsehole
AAAWWWWWWWuuuuuuuuuu
>what jews do to goys with tv
HmmmMMMMmm
oooOOOOOAAAAHHHHH
>Chamberlain interrupts and obliterates their harmonics
More lore oriented but I also hate niggers
also when they drink the adrenochrome
the female skeskis one was the only one that actually bothered me. of course you hate niggers, that's your prerogative
Hopefully yes.
Are you a cucked Gelfling, or a based Skeksis?

Who can stop their deadly HMM teamup?
>"humble" outsiders who slowly take over and run shit while taking everything they can to the point where they commit ritualistic murder until they're driven out
Yep
>original movie
>amazing practical effects, a very calm, almost dream-like atmosphere, everyone talks and acts like they're right out of an old, otherwordly fairy tale
>Age of Resistance
>BBBRRRAAAAPPP epic loud music throughout the entire trailer, one over the top action sequence after the other, CGI out the ass where only the main characters are actual puppets, everyone constantly screaming
Literally none of that describes the show. It's extremely faithful.
I have only seen the trailer and it looked like hot garbage, is it a pleasant surprise or what?
>trailer
What noise did he make again?
AHHHHHHHHH
I thought the same with the trailer, but the first episode was really good.
I don't understand the adrenochrome meme. it doesn't seem like it'd be something too terribly difficult to synthesize. even if it was you wouldn't need to harvest it from humans as animals have it too, and the idea of dying from withdrawals of it is retarded.
>CGI out the ass where only the main characters are actual puppets
where did you get this fucking idiot idea? All the characters are puppets. They had ninety puppeteers working on this show.
Yes, and everything else is CGI, especially the backgrounds.
Is it good? I loved the movie
Everything aside from the characters is CGI, don't kid yourself.
How about you go ahead and watch it you stupid braindead faggot? Holy shit do you get all of your opinions from Yea Forums you waste of space?
No. They had massive sets for the show, which they show off in lavish detail. CG is used where it needs to be used, mainly it's for removing puppeteer elements or for landscape shots.
Based, the series looks like a shitty video game.
stop talking to yourself
Jerry Garcia
>CG MEAN BAD
>>Everything aside from the characters is CGI
and the sets, and the props...
Yeah I'm sure the whole chase sequence was done in their own rollercoaster set bro.
It is when the movie was famous for having amazing practical effects.
Now I'm hungry.
>Netflix made not just a good but legitimately great followup to a passion project original that puts love, care and effort into every single frame.
>The actors are all cast to play puppets and still give it their all with fantastic acting.
What fucking timeline is this again?
CG can be used tastefully, if you had a nominal IQ you would realize that.
>amazing practical effects
Which the series has in massive amounts. You're blatantly trying to manufacture this shit out of some preplanned whining about "muh cg, muh old".
I can't imagine the budget, Netflix just gave them every dollar they had.
brain dead nigger
Practical effects cost less than CGI actually. CGI is used because people don't bother and have no talent anymore.
Nice shilling you guys got going on here. That one user was right, the series is full of CGI and looks like a video game, now fuck off.
Glad most of it is real shit in real life, it makes it hard to look away when it's all in motion.
Puppetry is actually pretty damn cheap, comparitively, the very sparing CGI might have worked to this movie's benefit. Relying on props no doubt took longer but without the heavy CGI cost associated with it, they could probably do more with less money.
Adjusted for inflation, the original cost $35,767,332.71 to make.
If you ever needed some proof that it's not actually about the show or film, it's about posting greentexts on Yea Forums for some people, just look at the shitters in this thread.
Deet is a cute. I was legit mad when the Stonewood creeps were picking on her.
On the other hand, it sure is time consuming. They started filming for the show two years ago, the voice acting wasn't done til last year. And design work had been going on about 18 months before the filming. All in all it took about 4-5 years to do the show from start to finish.
I guess that is where the "cost" really adds up, think how long a new season will take at this level of quality.
The show is great so far, i feel like im actually immersed in a fantasy world and i havent felt that way when watching a movie in a while. Such a spectacle to look at, and the voice acting is excellent too. Only on episode 3 so far though.
I await the webms.
Which is another thing I should have commended earlier , that they also have to sync their voice acting to the footage of the puppets.
At least in this case, the design and setup stage is done, and the writers and co are used to writing for puppets now. So they could get off the ground quickly on another batch.
There's an interview with the writers where they mentioned they gradually learned over writing the season how to accomadate the puppeteers more. Like if you wrote a scene where a Gelfling walks into a room, goes over to another Gelfling and hands them an object, then leaves, that's pretty simple on paper, but in reality it requires three different stage setups for the performers just for those three shots. So they would learn how to not add needlessly time consuming yet mundane things if not required and know the limitations of puppeteering. As they put it, it's easier to make a Gelfling look authentically sad than it is to have one pick up a bar of soap.
Which also tells you why CG is important in a show like this, go look at how the Skeksis work for instance (assuming the setup is pretty similar in the new series).
A second puppeteer is needed to control the other arm if it needs to move in a shot, but now instead of being awkwardly limited by having to shoot around it, you can remove any visibility of the second puppeteer with CG, allowing you much more mobility and able to do more complex scenes with the Skeksis puppets, or even just make doing seemingly uncomplicated shots that are actually really difficult to shoot a lot easier.
If you love the movie, youre gonna love this. It really dives deep into the lore of the world barely touched on in the original movie.
I hope for one of the swooping shot through the library that introduced Brea. You can tell they were proud of that set.
I have the most uncomfortable boner
>watch first episode
>get barraged with approximately eighty characters while I'm still trying to figure out which Skeksis is which and there's nearly no exposition outside of the intro voiceover explaining the world
I knew they were taking inspiration from other properties newer than The Dark Crystal too but I didn't know The Wire was one of them. Not complaining mind, but there were like eight or nine blond Gelfling females with posh British accents to keep track of.
I feel you but it did pretty nicely sort itself out by the end of the episode.
I like the world-building. It's a lot to take in at once, with all the Gelfling clans and characters, but as the show goes on, they become more distinct. The thing that threw me off was how well the Skesis and Gelflings got along, at least in the first episode.
>Deet's clan of Gelflings have huge pupils compared to the others because they live in underground caves with little light
It's all in the little design stuff. Like the Ornamentalist has rouge on his face like the old French nobles because he's a vain fop. You get a lot of the personality by just looking at the puppet designs.
there's absolutely zero dumbing down for the audience which is great, they expect you to just pay attention and keep up
I loved this dude in the film, I hope he's in the show a lot and is faithful?
Did they?
He's exactly the same.
like EXACTLY, it's uncanny how spot on Simon Pegg got the "mmMMMmmmm" from the film
I can definitely feel some Game of Thrones influence on the show, not the specific plot or even characters but more the general idea of a huge cast of disparate clans spread across a big geography and a decadent court of backstabby bad guys we follow just as much as the heroes.
It helps that three actress from GoT provide voices.
and I mean having Lena Heady voice a character rebelling against the evil nobles is a bit of a giveaway
...
CLEAN IT UP PODLING
there's also a bit of the Star Wars prequels, in the depiction of the relatively peaceful and ordered past civilization as it's starting to come apart, with the knowledge from the film that eventually this all goes to shit with Thra ruined, the Gelflings almost extinct and the Skeksis gradually decaying away.
The production values are impeccable, jesus. How are there not more threads about this?
That's me on the right.
It just hit today, most haven't watched it yet. And also it's good, so Yea Forums can't complain about it and thus they have no interest.
Gonna be the biggest pleb filter of 2019, I can already tell.
I see it, but I enjoy they're not trying to BE game of thrones. There's not any one thing you can point and say they shamelessly copied and tried to cram in there, like they did with Castelvania. If it got the influence its the good one where its just saying to give everyone proper development and establish their motivations and direction.
Yes it's just some general inspiration for the set-up of the show, which is a-ok. Fantasy's come a long way in the public consciousness since 1982.
first episode was amazing as a life long fan
the question is will normies watch it?
Probably not, but they have shit taste anyway.
Also, finish it before you get spoiled.
I SAW MY BAAAYBAY
Fuck off shill
Library Princess who I can't remember the name of, Underground brown girl Deets, and main castle guard boy who I can't remember the name of are the only main characters other than skeksis and augra
>"Take a look at THIS bullshit. Sarah. I knew you want this FREAKY ball up your bum, Sarah. DON'T DEFY ME."
It would be rude not to, as far as Juno Temple is concerned.
Is Chamberlain basically the Dark Crystal's version of a GAMERS RISE UP mascot? I just have this feeling that the next mass shooting will be some edgekid dressed as Chamberlain.
Just watched the first episode. This is kino on another level. It's like my childhood has returned.
Given how complicated the Skeksis puppets are I would love to see an attempted shooter very slowly hobbling into a crowded place, requiring a second guy to help move it.
It feels like something made in the 90s other than the obvious cgi animals/mechanisms/sweeping shots that wouldn't have been possible back then
david bowie fucked a 14 year old fan who wrote him a letter
This, Netflix shills in full force tonight.
He's in the show but he doesn't look like the way he does in the movie at the beginning
OK.
Do all the skeksis have name or just titles? All named in episode 1?
They all have names, they use their title and name interchangeably. You can see them all in the cast list, they all start with skek. skekSil (the Chamberlain), skekSo (the Emperor) etc.
stay mad you opinionless faggot
This shit gave me nightmares at a kid. It was awful but I couldn’t look away.
hmmmmmMMMMMMMMmmmmmm
this is the new meme shit
>new
>The Dark Crystal is a 1982 puppet animated dark fantasy adventure film directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz.
They used to just have first names, then other groups of the land forced them to choose last names, so they could not undermine villages as easily. Titles are interchangeable.
>The Librarian
>The Scroll Keeper
Kind of redundant. Not really that creative.
>The Myth Speaker
> The Ritual Master
Same shit.
Also, if Skeksis are the "humble merchants" of Thar, the Podlings are the Asian men since the got BTFO.
Yeah except the Librarian is just a Gelfling librarian while the Scroll Keeper is the Skeksis historian.
And the Myth Speaker is just the narrator who shows up once and is never mentioned by name and the Ritual Master is the Skeksis in charge of their fucked up rituals and torture. So user is just a fucking idiot.
TRIAL BY STONE
A man of fine taste I see
>TRIAL BY STONE

>autistic screeching dog thing
i havent seen the dark crystal movie in over 15 years, but those lines have never left me. is that oprah thing in the show or is it straight sexies and gelflings?
It does overload you for the first 15 minutes but the longer you watch the more things flesh out and make sense.

hmmmmmmMMMMMMMMmmmmmm
>Chamberlain becomes a meme in 2019
I hope.so, I loved that prick when I was a kid, after seeing the film I'd piss off my parents by constantly doing his HMMMM noise at everything.
Probably going to binge watch the absolute shit out of this tomorrow.
Debating on if I should watch the original first or not.
Gotta get some blankets and hot chocolate.
>CHAMBERIN NOOO PREASE DONT RIE TO EMPORER ABROUT ME NOOOO
No, he has a point. The Dark Crystal was a straight up fantasy story. Injecting modern politics into it would be a bitch move.
i just marathoned the first episode. where the fuck are jens weird looking parents, those hunchback 6 armed things that are the skeksis brother/cousins/alt selves
If you haven't seen it, you should. You don't actually need to have seen it to watch the show, but I think you'll appreciate it more. The film has a weird stilted dreamlike feel to its story and dialogue which isn't present in the series, they are a lot more natural.
I've seen it, but christ its probably been at least 16 years since the last time.
Fuck it, when I put it like that yeah I'm just gonna rewatch that shit first. Been too long.
The Mystics are in it, the first one shows up in episode four.
Is based Gathim Master in the new show? I assume not since I dont think they have the big bugs yet. That dude pushed MmmMmmmmMmmm's shit in.
>hmmmmMMMMMMMmmmm... party rockers in the house tonight, yeeees?
>gelflings and podlings gonna have a bad time they do, hmmMM?
No, Skeksis friend...want peace between Lee and Skeksis!
AHHH, MY HAND! NOW YOU DIE CHINAMAN!
They're revealing the history as far as the Gelflings know about it in the current era. At some point they'll drop the urSkek bomb megatweest and the urHa/Skeksis relationship. Deetz already knows of the Conjunction as early as the pilot but doesn't know she knows.
Is it injecting modern politics if its just following the same storyline from a 1980's movie? Because
>Original is about a bunch of evil birdfuckers who drained a crystal that's broken and said broken crystal is corrupting the world and turning it dark, birdfuckers primary motivation in movie is to drain the two gelflings to keep their immortality
This show
>Starts with the crystal being drained and the first signs of the world turning foul, and starts with the whole gelflings being drained thing because that's how they all got wiped out in the original.
I mean yeah you can say "Its about climate change" if you want to interpret it that way, but none of them ever say something like "The dark crystal isn't drained, that's a myth made up from the Blightmese to weaken Skesis!" or "We need restrictions on fossil crystals or the whole world will burn!" Fantasy being interpreted to mean something isn't exactly farfetched, the only hangups come when they force the modern issues and date it horribly with pop culture slang.
At the end of the day regardless of how some asshole with a blog interprets it, the story is about greedy birdfucks who drained a magic crystal and now our not-human protagonists have to race to save themselves from having their magic sucked out and consumed. Which is what the original was about.
MMMMmmmmMMMMmmmm
What about when that Gelfling bitch turns to the camera in episode 4 and says FUCK SKEKTRUMP!
>all those hicks who thought The Two Towers was about 9/11
anyone read the comic books from 2005? if so is augrahs jesus son made out of rock mentioned at all, or is that all non canon now?
>once...there was this gelfling
Raunip has not been mentioned yet, but is still canon. Might be referenced if there's a S2.
Does this nigger get to do anything in the new show? He was pretty scary to 6 year old me.
never read the comic books. an ex of mine had that one dark crystal lore book that may or may not be back in print. lots of good shit in that
He's in it a fuckton
More like the SEXIES, amirite?
>imb4 tumblr porn
are the podlings retarded?
they're goy
What's his title? Just started watching and some of the Skeksis are hard to tell a part.
Chamberlain
Pleb
They are goyim subscribers. Gelflin are Epstein girls, and the old lady with one is is just a regular old Filipina.
>can't even eat w/o crops
>I no how soft ur gelfling hands are lmao
>mystics swerve
how many episodes is my nigga fizzgig in? hes a dealbreaker for me
Fizzgig are a species. And there's quite a few in the show.
HhhhMMMMMmmmm
That's the Garthim-Master/General that clashes with Chamberlain and becomes the second Emperor . I'm only an episode in and he is not in the cast list (there's a Skeksis called the General but seems to be a different character) but someone in the thread said he is in it but his role is a little more complicated.
Yeeeeeah
man i thought OP image was pic related and got excited for a comfy thread
>that scene in the movie where you see that the Skeksis have a second, shriveled pair of vestigial arms, just like the Mystics
I'll have to keep watching. I'd figure he'd be in it since he is important to the film, but since it doesn't look like they have Gathim yet. I figured he must have a different title at this point. Kind of lame if he isn't in it.
Shekelsis?
>that podling who wants to be a knight and thinks his spoon is a sword
hes gonna die soon isnt he?
He is in it but doesn't look how he looks in the film at the beginning. You'll have to keep watching.
Look here nigger:
skekSo = Emperor
skekSil = Chamberlain
skekUng = General
skekTek = Scientist
skekZok = Ritual Master (has the thing on the top of his head)
skekAyuk = Gormand (fat boy)
skekEkt = The Faggot
skekOk = Scroll Keeper
skekLach = Pustules woman
I like that Harvey Fierstein as the Gormund is the only one that doesn't have to do a crazy voice as the Skeksis as the raspy voice is just what he sounds like.
Thanks user, I'll keep watching. Skekstein The Gold keeper.
Sucking dick will do that.
my only complaint is Keegan-Michael Key sounds nothing like the original SkekZok.
in fairness the Skeksis other than Chamberlain, Garthim-Master and Scientist didn't have a lot of lines in the original anyway

So this show seems like it's going to be pretty fucked up, seeing as how it ends up with the gelflings being genocided.
>only 2 gelflings left to repopulate the species
incest fetish dream right there
it's ok they win in the end
>being this much of a zoomer
Did you see KOTM?
>"I don't have wings."
>"Of course you don't. You're a boy..."
Stupid mangelfling i told them Skeksis good people, mangelfling always ruin everything because antiskeksemitic. If only there were more femgelfling in the world this would never happen!
What was his problem?
