He was one of the few Hollywood martial artists back in the day, was in some really good movies that were way higher quality than anything else in the genre at the time, and died under "mysterious circumstances" (because they covered up his drug use). This, especially that last bit, led to a lot of rumors and legends surrounding the guy, to the point where Bruce Lee was as much a real person as he was the martial arts god character he portrayed on screen.

Bruce Lee was utterly irrelevant to the rise of MMA though.
MMA developed in the west in brazil as vale tudo throughout the 20th century. The gracies decided to expand into the USA, got cash off a few interested parties and held the first UFC event.
In the east MMA developed simultaneously as an offshoot of shoot wrestling fights, catch-as-catch-can wrestling was a big thing there and it evolved naturally from that.
These events occurred entirely outwith Bruce Lee acting in his films.

Not the other guy, but Tyson wasn't just big, he was terrifyingly fucking fast. He had utterly next-level reflexes, and the power was just icing on the cake. Speed is absolutely one of the biggest factors in a (real) fight, and Lee was also fucking fast.

I don't think ive ever seen a more cringe internet phenomenon than random gymrats trying to "debunk" Lee and frothing at the mouth over how they would just le put him into a lock. Bruce would have killed you before you even blinked. He was all business no talk, a practical killing machine that invented the concept of utilitarian fighting arts rather than trying to be a "master" of some ancient style that amounts to nothing in real battle. Bruce would never have joined something like the UFC because his ability was a killing tool, not something to do for sport
