Jackman and Mangold were trying for years to get an R-rated Wolverine movie made, but Fox kept dicking with them
The Wolverine was greenlit as an R movie and shot like one, but they shot it so it would be easy to edit things out for cable TV (digital blood, alternate takes without swearing, stuff like that) and in post-production Fox decided to release the PG-13 cable version as the theatrical version, infuriating Jackman/Mangold (the “unrated” version of Wolverine is actually the original cut)
When Deadpool came out and was huge, Fox said “ok we’ll let the next one be R, for realsies this time” but Jackman/Mangold didn’t trust them so they shot it as R but with no consideration taken for cable TV so FOX couldn’t fuck them again
