The Beach

What is this movie about for you? A movie against the effects of mass tourism? A movie about an American young man that is bored with his empty life in the West and wants to find something real in an exotic country but that at the end he realizes that his boring and empty life is better than the dangerous quest for something exciting because that paradise that he is searching for doesn't exist?

At the end of the movie he says:

>And me? I still believe in paradise. But now at least I know it's not some place you can look for. Because it's not where you go. It's how you feel for a moment in your life when you're a part of something. And if you find that moment... it lasts forever.

He is saying that paradise or happiness is not a place where you go or something you do. It's belonging to a group, being part of something that has meaning... I think he also says that happiness is just a moment in your life, or some moments, and that the rest is emptiness and suffering and you only have that memory of when you were happy to remember you what happiness is. To at least think "well, at least I was part of that for a while, at least I did something in my life that had meaning". You can see this in how his expression changes at the end when he is watching the photo of when he was in the beach. First he is happy to remember that time but then he realizes that it will never happen again and he becomes sad.

Some things I didn't understand:

1) What happened to the woman that was the leader? He says that she remained in the island but, how? Everybody left I think. Did she remain like a slave for the drug dealers or what?
2) Why would the drug dealers allow a bunch of white hippies live there in their secret island where they grow their weed? What do they gain with it?
3) At the end we see how a ship of tourists is heading to the island (I think). Does this mean that the secret island is now just another part where the tourists or cancers and parasites as they are called in the movie have flooded too?

Some other things:

1) The french guy was a reaaaaaaaaaaal cuck boy. He allowed Leo to fuck her girlfriend and he wanted the best for her so he made peace with Leo and they still remained friends hahahaha.
2) The french girl was a reaaaaaaaaaaal bitch. "Let me fuck this American cute boy because I like him more than my old boyfriend, but for no reason at all. And all of that in front of him and in an island where he can't just go to other place and has to watch me fuck this American boy every night".

Read the book. Its much better.

>1) What happened to the woman that was the leader? He says that she remained in the island but, how? Everybody left I think. Did she remain like a slave for the drug dealers or what?
She likely just remained by herself or with one or two other people (I remember the book slightly better than the movie, where there was one other guy who likely stayed with her). She likely just lived in isolation.
>2) Why would the drug dealers allow a bunch of white hippies live there in their secret island where they grow their weed? What do they gain with it?
They tolerated it because they didn't lose anything. Both were there illegally, both knew of each other, and simply didn't interact or bring trouble. Both had good reasons to keep everything a secret, something the protagonist destroyed when he invited groups of random people over.

I think the movie is average. Didn’t convey any depth other than yuppie 20 something’s naive idealism getting ass raped by the reality of humanity. The rest was just gay escapism pron. Also shitty French tits

Wait, did those people kill other people because of weed? Who gives a shit about weed in jungle asia?

But would you let a group of people, foreigners, live where you have your secret plantation of weed? It will lead to problems sooner or later and that is what happened. The story should have had something that explain that part. Like the europeans doing some work for the drug dealers in exchange of being allowed to live there.

I have heard that drug laws are very hard in countries like Thailand.

What about Richard (potagonist) coming back to the USA and not giving a fuck about the guy he chocked to death (he was dying but he did it anyways) and specially the 3 other persons that he made that the drug dealers kill them?

He doesn't seem to have any remorse when we see him checking his email in a cyber cafe...

Think either they were there first or they both got there around the same time. And why not? As far as they were aware, for decades they had been quietly living there without bothering them. If all of a sudden a bunch of white people disappeared in Thailand with some potential leads to the island (who knows), the authorities would investigate and the drug dealers would be fucked. Better to let them just quietly live there instead of massacring everyone. Plus, they might have actually talked it out, but I don't remember.

Its not deep, its a clusterfuck of meaning, just a popular thriller novel at the time. Probably written by a tourist in thailand who had read lord of the flies

I liked this movie. I think you're overthinking it a tad.

It's the dream for a lot of young men to go traveling and start slamming some hot puss and live it up in a foreign land. It just so happens this idea was exaggerated to the max. But it's a tribute to the spirit of going out and doing stuff as a young person. Notice everybody on the island was young. It's a celebration of youth and what experience you can get yourself in to. Also the exclusivity of experience. Part of what makes things interesting, cool, or memorable is they are shared among a select few group of people. You see the same thing in cliques and social media. That's just part of life.

Plus that chick in it was mega hot oh my god.

>Probably written by a tourist in thailand who had read lord of the flies
It was written by Alex Garland.

>Plus that chick in it was mega hot oh my god.
What chick? The french one?

I think he evaded the tiger. You can hear to a drifting sound. He also gets a bonus. Also, it's a fucking drug trip so it's normal that things doesn't have much sense.

Would it have been a better movie if the director stood his ground and kept Ewan McGregor as the lead instead of shouty?

>reaaaaaaaaaaal
>reaaaaaaaaaaal
>hahahaha
You talk like a girl. Of course you don't understand simple movies for teens and twenty somethings.

How would you guys translate "Cyтpa ћy пyтoвaти мнoгo миљa бициклoм"?

Fuck Danny.
Could've gone to make more kino with Ewan and chose that autist instead

Test.

I want her to whisper "HON HON" into my ear while I fuck her

Want me to tell you how I know you've never killed someone?
