You get credit for making an entrie ethnic community accept non-asians as students allowing everything from wingchun to karate to judo to taichi to be common place hobbies or pursuits. And for showing up phoney "masters" who closely guarded there secrets as deadly but were actually just not willing to test their methods. And for populariing them full stop. And for finally breaking down the biggest barrier, "I am a Judoka" or "I am a Karata-ka" or somesuch.
No one mixed boxing and judo seriously unless they were some weird monk like student that spent forever travelling to different temples. Even then, if you took martial arts seriously, you would go train with one guy for 20 years. Lee was the first serious athlete to encourage cross teaching.
It is like the reverse of universities, where people used to become a Doctor by starting with philosophy first, and getting your ethics sorted, and you were expected to learn oratory, rhetoric, history, a few languages (especially latin and greek) and take up a sport. You didn't get accepted to universities pre-industrial revolution if you weren't a Renaissance Man. Nowadays, you can be an autist goign for computer science and they factory farm you into a course, no Greek or theology training needed.
