According to schaub in later interviews the attack was an extremely traumatic moment, probably wouldn’t have been able to approach a fight in the right mindset after, and it probably didn’t help
that the world and Schaub’s own brother agreed completely with joe.

No.

i thought the same thing when it aired but i think it was a smart move, brendan was so arrogant and unrealistically optimistic when he was in the ufc, and the only real way joe would have nailed his point in was to do it on air in front of the world. that conversation in private would have ended with brendan saying "ahhh, i see your point bro, i'll train harder and think about what you said dog"

Because Rogan understood that the only way to really make him understand, was to do it in a way that Schaub's ego wouldn't be able to assuage him to keep going. Rogan hates commenters but in this case that was probably what tipped it over because even the people who like Schaub probably agreed. Doing it so publicly could be seen as cruel, but ultimately it worked and Schaub gave up fighting.
