No, it's not. They canceled all of the "A Star Wars Story" movies after Solo bombed. Rian Johnson's trilogy is almost certainly not happening too, I think they're just sticking him in pre-production hell until 9 comes out so they don't have to admit he did a bad job on 8 by canceling the trilogy officially.

Rian Johnson's trilogy has absolutely not been canceled. He's still talking about it as recently as this week. If Disney wanted people to forget about it they would make him stop talking about it. It's just wishful thinking for people who want Disney to lose so much that they enter a fantasy realm.

You know, I'm as critical as anybody when it comes to Disney/Marvel hiring workman directors who are constrained into leaving no discernable mark on their projects. There is nothing wrong with hiring unproven talent, but it's obvious that these directors are hired for a job or technical skills, not their take. Their conduits for the company line, or Feige, or the edict to not adjust/change anything regarding what they're adapting, e.g. Live Action Disney Remakes. Even when they've hired Burton or Guy Ritchie for these remakes, something still feels hollow. Dumbo is not nearly odd enough to be a Burton movie, although it is a Burton-esque story. As far as Aladdin goes, it feels like someone said "hey, we've got a pseudo-urban setting here. Guy Ritchie likes to have people run through alleys. Profit?" And profit they did, despite the fact that Ritchie was not hired for his particular style, or so it seems to me.

The fact that a) Disney's tentpoles make Money and b) deliver experiences that are at least neutral to mostly positive is enough to justify them in terms of business and spirit. Even if neutrality is a sin, the most we can say is that we might have wasted our time on these films, not that they were out-and-out bad or poorly made. And there are exceptions to this trend also. Kenneth Branaugh was a great choice to direct Cinderella, in my opinion, and it was a strong intersection of his personal style and the material. Their two greatest shepherds of the brand are Favreau (who has become more workman in Lion King and Jungle Book), delivering in terms of technical spectacle, and the Russos, who developed their style over the course of their Marvel work, beginning with a directive to totally turn away from Johnston's campiness in Captain America: The First Avenger.

A safe shepherd in Abrams, whose only flaw was delivering a film that was overly reverant to the OT to an audience that was waiting for Disney to make a mistake. The Force Awakens is a solid movie that goes no lower than neutral in some of its choices and as a high as the stylistic choices in Rey's force vision and the forest duel. More brand management and the beginning of Lucasfilm's suffocation of creator voices can be seen for better or worse first with Gareth Edwards in Rogue One, then in Solo with Lord/Miller. We all remember how that turned out, concluding with the sudden entry of Ron Howard- another shepherd of the brand.
