It's basically impossible to get away with a crime today if the police actually puts some effort in looking for the criminal. Mass shootings get much more publicity today because there's pretty much zero active serial killers, and even if there are any, there are measures to stop them from exploiting the media for attention. I don't remember where I heard this but the police has the resources to solve any crime, it's just a problem of distributing those resources properly.

The police can catch you if you do regular crime or kill a person you know. If you kill people you don't know, and don't kill in the same area, then the cops have almost nothing to go on unless you're already in a DNA database. That's why the joke about serial killers being truckers is a thing, because in today's world that's just the type of job a serial killer would gravitate towards and which would let them escape the cops for a long time. Since they not only would commit the crimes in different areas but could also dump the bodies miles from where they committed it. The cops can't do shit if they don't have a witness, crime scene or motive, so all you're left with is all the Jane Does found by the side of roads who remain unidentified for years or decades. Hell, people look at the side of the roads so infrequently that the bodies might not even be found until years later.

Serial killers don't get publicity today because the cops realised that certain types of serial killers ramp up their killings when they get attention, because they like the articles written about them. So they no longer hold press conferences about it, since they wouldn't actually help, and the media plays along to save lives. They're just retarded and haven't caught on yet that mass shooters want exactly the same thing, or rather ignore it for ratings and money.
