Actually I think he played Hydlide, but if you ever watch James and Mike mondays, he seems to have a hard time grasping really simple concepts, James really isn't that big into games. Well I recently watched the superman 64 revisited episode, and there's bits where he's talking about characters exclusively from the show as if he knows who they are, despite obviously not being familiar with it, and at the end of the episode the bit referencing the man of steel Zod neck snap, the reference just feels too contemporary, which doesn't seem like James style.

I played Chex Quest when it first came out, wasn't bad for the time.

That's why his reviews always had so many skits in them, including weird character cameos from the games or franchises, because he loved making movies in general. AVGN's quality dipped and rose several times during his high-time, but it truly turned to an all-time shitlow after he made his movie, because since then he was operating under the illusion of not only being a ture "film-maker" but also a creditable actor, and it showed around the 101th (?) episode.

- He could afford higher quality cameras, which may have increased the picture's fidelity but it also took away from the "comfy" factor of his older videos.
- He started "serious" acting his AVGN character which fall pretty flat
- His voice got really annoying
- Most of the jokes were played out
- Reviewing old shitty games was already an old hat by then

his character was great when he focused on the core principle of the nerd character and it was having to deal with the shit people dealt with trying to not just play but find good video games in the 80s. He even played good games but you could laugh and understand his anger when he dies to some bullshit cause everyone who played video games could relate to the feelings you get when some bullshit happens to you.

At some point the character just turned into getting angry at anything that happened. any video you watch from at least the last 6 years you can predict the exact moments he'll say "shitload of fuck" or "what were they thinking" and see him do a grimace. He really shined in board james though because he really put work into the character and luckily he ended it before he could run THAT into the ground.
