It really wasn't the worst idea in the world, but it didn't catch on for exactly the reasons listed in this thread; it felt skeevy and greedy, it was wasteful, and the original marketing campaign was completely botched, making people think they were buying something that would self destruct, which is stupid for obvious reasons.
Further, investors weren't too hip on the idea either, for exactly

The problem is, you think that we think capitalism has "failed", and we want to just flip a "Breadlines" switch. That's not really what we want.

The basic idea behind communism is that certain resources and services are (or should be) so plentiful or easily obtained that bargaining for them is pointless, like the air we breathe or (in most cases), the water we drink.
We get there by making systems more efficient and reliable, and we do that by exploiting basic competitive spirit. Communism isn't the antithesis to capitalism, it's the logical endpoint.

The point of capitalism is to make money. You make money by establishing systems of profit, and making those systems more efficient. Eventually you get to a point where those systems are so efficient that it actually starts costing you resources to slow those systems down to remain profitable. That's more or less where we are now. The uber-rich of the world are literally hamstringing their own means of production to remain making money, and to remain in power. That's what late-stage capitalism means, and why Marxist revolution is necessary, because those in power must step down to create wealth, and they'll never do that voluntarily.

It's like a game of monopoly. Monopoly ends when everyone is broke but one person. The problem is, in real life, the game doesn't end. So what happens?
We're currently in late-stage capitalism. We need to institute socialist policies while we still can, and free people from the oppression of the corporations.

The angling is basically just routing some of the power into a motor to rotate the panel during the day, it's not that difficult. Cleaning the panels, though? That's a hassle, especially if you put them somewhere useful, like a desert.
