I had this question too so I played a downloaded 4K HDR copy of Blade Runner 2049 on my SDR monitor and the colors were all washed out, so I guess you'll need an HDR screen for this

You can make it look normal if you do tone-mapping. VLC 3.0 does this by default but it is quite dark. The best method is MPC + MadVR. Takes some extra effort to setup but is the best way to take advantage of UHD movies if you don't have an HDR monitor.

That's why I can only watch the original theatrical cut. No plantation scenes, no long ass vapid scenes with the playboy girls. The bunnies danced in front of a myriad of horny soldiers and that's that. Aditional scenes in Redux and final cuts dragged this masterpiece down.

UHD 4k is only real when the source film exists in 70mm or was shot in 4k.

Depends on the movie. Anything before about 2000 will be real 4K since those were shot on film stock. Modern movies are a crapshoot since most are shot digitally and were either filmed at less than 4K or were downscaled to make it easier to work with in post.

You clearly haven’t seen the final cut. I have the 4 hour work print, theatrical, redux, and just watched the final cut at an Alamo on Thursday. Final Cut is the best way to see the movie (although I plan to rewatch them all just to be sure).

I can, however the DRM around 4k blu rays is so ridiculous it is legitimately better to pirate them. Ny Blu ray collection is quite large, but Id rather just throw a 4k blu ray remux at my plex library than deal with always online special discs that only work with certain drives, with certainty n CPUs and certain software and need the right DRM cheques all the way through. Digital distribution of movies is a joke so that leaves piracy. When I can buy the DRM free 4k BluRay remux I will.

There seems to be a lot of misconceptions about 4k blu rays being too flat or dark. It’s understandable cuz at least on my tv the best settings for 4k are completely different than regular blu ray. 4ks just temperamental and requires the right settings and it’ll shimmer.

Does the original version have better pacing? I saw the final cut in theaters recently, and I liked it, but some scenes dragged, especially the plantation scene.

The movie doesn't work without the French Plantation scene.

Without it, the start of the conflict is not examined, as well as America's repetition of history's past mistakes, and their refusal to learn from them.

It is also an examination of the previous centuries' mentality regarding what civilization is or isn't.

Finally, being the last stop before the devolvement, it is the last place where everyone leaves, and buries, their humanity behind.

I recently watched it, the Redux version, for the first time. What a disappointment.

I watched this film for the first time a couple days ago (Redux version) and thought it was fantastic, maybe even the best film ever made. What's so great about the theatrical cut? Is it just shorter? I don't think this film benefits at all from being shorter, the whole appeal to me was its epic Odyssey-esque scale of adventure and slow descent into hellish madness. I can't think of a single scene in the Redux version that could be abridged or removed without hurting its atmosphere considerably.

apparently that was the main complaint about the redux - that it felt too long - which prompted Coppola to make the final cut

People are probably just going to end liking whichever cut they watched first the most. As a theatrical fan, many of the extra scenes feel completely out of tone, contain poor acting or are just boring. That said, I do think the theatrical becomes too fast paced once you've seen Redux. A happy medium exists somewhere between, though I don't think it's even to be found in the Final Cut for me.

I'm pretty sure the release includes all cuts + Heart of Darkness (the doc) but don't quote me on that.
